    Summary

    Colorado NM Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

    Mesa Verde NP- Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will be paid if the selectee lives outside of the local commuting area and is otherwise eligible for reimbursement of relocation expenses in accordance with the Federal Travel Regulation.

    Responsibilities

    These are Career-Seasonal positions and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal positions includes all the benefits of permanent employment, but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectees will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectees are guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment.

    The typical period of non-pay status for Colorado National Monument is December thru February, but can be variable during these months due to project requirements or weather conditions.

    The typical period of non-pay status for Mesa Verde National Park is, September thru October but can be variable during these months due to project requirements or weather conditions.

    Work on park-wide trails construction and maintenance projects. May lead (train) Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) employees, volunteers and conservation crews in new trail construction or maintenance projects in the front and back country. Projects include foot trails in wilderness, front country paths, footbridge construction and maintenance, re-vegetation work and general maintenance and cleaning tasks. With guidance from the supervisor, survey and mark trails prior to construction, procure materials, tools and equipment for the crews and assist writing detailed construction specifications. Responsible for the quality, quantity and safety of work performed under his/her leadership. Assist in development of job hazard analysis documents and training, holding regular tailgate safety meetings and ensuring that crews work safely.

    Must possess a broad knowledge of the specialized tools, skills and techniques associated with new trail construction and maintenance including sustainable trail design, general trail maintenance practices, masonry and log carpentry work. Work also includes moving a variety of materials (stone, logs, fill, etc.) to work sites, maintaining and (re)constructing trail tread, hauling materials, rehabilitating project sites, cleaning drainages, installing signs, transplanting vegetation and brushing trail segments.

    May be required to safely operate and maintain a variety of equipment, power tools and hand tools such as skid steer loaders, trucks with GVWR up to 26,000 pounds or over, towing trailers up to 10,000 pounds, power wheelbarrows, chain saws, generators, rigging equipment, shovels, rock bars, picks, axes, crosscut saws, single-jack hammers, transit levels, clinometers, tape measures and more.

    To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:
    1. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision
      • Performing trail construction and maintenance projects such as water bars, rock steps, retaining walls, drainage structures, rip-rap tread, bridges and signs. This experience includes extensive knowledge of carpentry, masonry, trail condition assessment, use of hand tools and equipment operation in a trail maintenance and construction capacity. I have led other trail workers on backcountry and front country trails for a professional trail crew (i.e., NPS, U.S. Forest Service, Private Trail Crew, etc.) I have instructed subordinates or peers in trail and trail equipment maintenance, and the proper and safe use of tools and equipment.     2. Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (other than blueprints)
    3. Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
    4. Knowledge of materials
    5. Technical Practices (theoretical precise, artistic)

A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.

    Physical Demands: Heavy physical effort is required in bending, lifting, and using hand and power tools in trail work. Examples of typical strenuous activity include:
    • Frequently lifts and carries objects weighing over 100 pounds, must carry and roll rocks and logs, move rocks of several tons with rock bars, use hammers to crush or shape rock, and use shovel extensively.
    • Frequently hikes up to 20 miles daily, and must be able to do so while carrying a backpack, power and/or hand tools.
    Working Conditions: Incumbent must have the ability to live and work effectively in backcountry areas in close contact with small numbers of people for extended periods of time. Incumbent must live and work out-of-doors on projects in various terrain up to 13,000 feet elevation in all extremes of adverse weather conditions. Trail work is dusty, and hazardous conditions may exist when moving rocks and logs, working in and around rockslide areas, working around stock, working around explosives, falling and bucking trees, and working around machinery.

    The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.
