    U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Justice Management Division (JMD), Library Staff's mission is to provide a leadership role in meeting the information needs of the Department of Justice. The primary purpose of this position is to provide direction and guidance in one or more library locations or to a major library system program. The Staff provides a complete range of library and related information services to the Offices, Boards, and Divisions and other DOJ organizations.

    • Provides direction of operations and guidance in one or more library locations or to a major library system program, in order to provide an effective program of user/public awareness of library programs and services.

    • Serves as an expert in the organization, development and implementation of multiple projects involving the Library Staff.
    • Responsible for planning, initiating, establishing, and maintaining professional relationships in order to further DOJ libraries resource sharing initiatives and to coordinate cataloging and digitization workflows.
    • Provides research, training, analysis, and expertise to attorneys and professional staff in all practice areas of the Department of Justice.
    • Performs other duties as assigned within the scope of the position description.

    To qualify for the position of Supervisory Librarian (Law) at (GS-1410-14), you must meet the basic qualification requirements, specialized knowledge requirements listed below AND possess the required specialized experience specific to this series and grade you're applying to.

    If you are a current or former government employee on a permanent appointment in the competitive service, you will need to demonstrate 1-year (52-weeks) at the next lower grade level, to meet the time-in-grade requirements for this occupational series and grade. Additionally, please ensure to submit an applicable SF50 (please refer to the "required documents" section for additional information).

    1. Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate study in library science in an accredited college or university, in addition to completion of all work required for a bachelor's degree; OR
    2. A total of at least 5 years of a combination of college-level education, training, and experience. To qualify on this basis, the applicant must establish conclusively that the education, training, and experience provided a knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and techniques of professional librarianship; a knowledge of literature resources; and the knowledge and abilities essential for providing effective library and information services.
    1. 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university that meets all academic requirements for a bachelor's degree that included at least 24 semester hours in Law Librarianship; or that included any combination of subjects with at least 15 semester hours in a major subject (Law Librarianship) that is applicable to the position; OR
    2. Completion of at least 24 semester hours of legal study in an accredited law school for positions primarily concerned with providing library services in law or legislative reference; OR
    3. Four years of pertinent experience of such nature and level to provide a knowledge of the basic principles, theories, practices, techniques, terminology, and expressions of digital librarianship; an understanding of the standard methods, procedures, and techniques of research and analysis in digital librarianship; ability to acquire additional information about the field and related fields; and some knowledge of literature resources in the field. Such experience should be equivalent to that which would have been acquired through successful completion of a full 4-year curriculum in an accredited college or university with major study in digital librarianship, or combination of subjects, as specified in (1) above; or legal training as specified in (2) above; OR
    4. Any time equivalent combination as described in (3) with education as described in (1) or (2) above.


    For the GS-14 level: Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service, experience includes:
    1. Developing, planning, and/or executing guidance documents and directives for a law library; and
    2. Providing leadership and strategic direction in managing and overseeing programs/projects or people; and
    3. Evaluating/assessing performance measures on individuals and/or law library programs.
