    Summary

    Serves as the Lead Systems Engineer for the Electrified Powertrain Flight Demonstration (EPFD) project in NASA's Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate (ARMD). Major responsibilities include leading design solution definition and implementation including requirements development, interface definition and management, design trades, risk management, technical design reviews, verification and validation planning and execution, and insight and oversight efforts for contractor activities.

    Responsibilities

    • Leads the overall technical management and technical solution of the project. Leads a team of system and sub-system engineers to develop mission concepts and to develop all levels of project requirements.
    • Develops and modifies immediate and long-range goals, plans, and objectives to meet program and project requirements.
    • Serves as expert consultant in planning, monitoring, and administering projects characterized by a changing physical environment, need to address critical issues, or other similar variables and unknowns in support of ground or flight demonstrations.
    • Defines, develops, and evaluates flight system operational requirements and objectives, mission requirements, and design considerations.
    • Leads the team in planning for and conducting analyses, tests, verification and validation, and certification of flight hardware and software based on systems requirements, mission objectives, and safety requirements.
    • Evaluates in-house and contractor proposals for flight systems and components and provides technical management and direction of contracts involving the design, development, integration, test, evaluation, and improvement of flight systems.
    • Provides highly advanced technical guidance and information to top level administrative and technical agency personnel.

    Qualifications

    In addition to the basic education requirement (shown below), you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

    To qualify for GS-15, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level including experience supporting ARMD programs/projects or activities in Systems Engineering sufficient to develop a project Systems Engineering Management Plan (SEMP) including system design, product integration, and technical effort integration including workforce, tailoring of systems engineering processes, and overall definition of planned work within cost and schedule constraints; experience in developing and maturing aircraft systems through ground or flight demonstrations, preferably related to propulsion technologies, and evaluating ground or flight system operational requirements and objectives, mission requirements, and design considerations.

    You must have successfully completed a bachelor's or graduate degree with a major in either a) engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs or b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science, Computer Science*, or other field of physical science.
    *Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.

    Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position.
