    About the Position:
    This position is for the DoDEA Virtual School in Sobe, Japan.

    The incumbent is required to reside within the DoDEA Pacific Area.

    Responsibilities

    • Is available to staff, students and sponsors on an as-needed basis via phone, instant message or other synchronous communication tools.
    • Communicates regularly with students, sponsors, staff and DVHS administrators.
    • Collaborates with other educators in required weekly content area digital learning communities (DLCs) to exchange ideas and utilize best practices for online learning.
    • Serves as a mentor to assist students in completing online coursework.
    • Establishes a plan to engage each online high school student and sponsor with information and support services geared toward positive academic outcomes.

    In order to qualify, you must meet the Education requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

    Applicant must have at least a Bachelor's Degree.
    Teacher (Elementary)-Coursework must include methods of teaching reading, math, language arts, and science. Note: in addition, a methods course or 1 year teaching experience in art, music, or physical education in the elementary school is required. Two years elementary classroom experience is desired. All applicants must have completed a minimum of 3 semester hours containing early childhood education if reassignment to lower elementary grades 1-3 becomes necessary for continuous employment.
    Teacher (Middle) English Language Arts-A major in English or a minimum of 24 semester hours in English. A maximum of 5 semester hours in speech and/or journalism may be credited toward meeting this requirement. Course work must include English literature, American literature, the teaching of composition (writing process), and at least 9 upper level semester hours in English.
    Teacher (Middle) Mathematics-A major in mathematics or a minimum of 24 semester hours in mathematics. Course work must include a minimum of 9 semester hours of upper level course work in mathematics. Only math credits earned from a Mathematics Department are acceptable.
    Teacher (Middle) Science-A major in general science or a minimum of 24 semester hours in the field of general science. Course work must include a minimum of 9 semester hours of upper level science courses. For teacher of life science and earth science, 9 semester hours are required in the assigned subject.
    Speech Language Pathologists-Requires a master's degree in speech/language pathology with course work distributed over at least 4 of the following areas: assessment of young children, assistive technology, augmentative communication, low incidence disabilities which include Autism Spectrum Disorder, selective autism, mental retardation, aphasia/dysphasia, cleft palate, and traumatic brain injury. Training in basic audiology and speech disorders is required. A second category is not required.
    Teacher Special Education (Elementary)-A major in special education or a minimum of 30 semester hours in special education is required. Course work must include a minimum of 12 semester hours directly related to severe or multiple disabilities. Typical courses include the following: the nature of mental retardation, use of adaptive equipment, augmentative communication and equipment, adaptive physical education, and family support.
    Teacher Special Education (Middle)-A major in special education or a minimum of 30 semester hours in special education is required. Course work must include a minimum of 12 semester hours directly related to severe or multiple disabilities. Typical courses include the following: the nature of mental retardation, use of adaptive equipment, augmentative communication and equipment, adaptive physical education, and family support.
    Teacher (Health/Physical Education)- Middle School-A major in health or a minimum of 24 semester hours in specific health related course work. Course work must include a minimum of 9 semester hours of upper level health courses. High School-A major in health or a minimum of 30 semester hours in specific health related course work is required. Course work must include a minimum of 12 semester hours in upper level health courses.
    Teacher (Computer Science)- A major in computer science, a minimum of 18 semester hours in computer science or 12 semester hours in computer science with additional qualification as a teacher of mathematics, science, or business is required. Course work must include programming languages such as JAVA, C++, VISUAL BASIC or other equivalent computer programming course work.
    Teacher (Kindergarten)-A major in early childhood education or a degree in elementary education with 24 semester hours in early childhood education is required. The 24 semester hours must be in the course description or title containing early childhood, kindergarten, or pre-kindergarten training. Coursework in methods of teaching emerging literacy and methods of teaching mathematics for early childhood, kindergarten, or pre-kindergarten is required. Two years of full-time experience teaching pre-kindergarten or kindergarten may be substituted for 3 semester hours of the required early childhood education coursework.
    Teacher Secondary (Science)-A major in general science or a minimum of 30 semester hours in the field of science is required. Course work must include a minimum of 12 semester hours of upper level science courses. A second category is not required.

    How You Will Be Evaluated

    Additional Information regarding overseas appointments:

    • If an employee brings a child to an overseas location and that child is entitled to attend a DoD school on a space-required basis in accordance with DoDEA Regulation 1342.13, the DoDEA and the Military Department responsible for providing related services will ensure that the child, if eligible for special education, receives a free appropriate public education, including related services pursuant to DoDI 1342.12 and DoDM 1342.12.
    • If an employee brings an infant or toddler (up to 3 years of age) to an overseas location, and that infant or toddler, but for the child's age, is entitled to attend the DoDEA on a space-required basis in accordance with DoDEA Regulation 1342.13, then the Military Department responsible for EIS will provide the infant or toddler with the required EIS in accordance with the eligibility criteria consistent with DoDI 1342.12 and DoDM 1342.12.
    • If an employee brings a family member to an overseas location who requires medical or dental care, then the employee will be responsible for obtaining and paying for such care. Access for civilian employees and their families to military medical and dental treatment facilities is on a space-available and reimbursable basis only.
    • Family member appointments will expire based on the sponsor's rotation date. Family member appointments may not exceed two months after an employee is no longer considered a family member within the local commuting area due to PCS or divorce of sponsor or, in the case of a child, the age of 23. Family members are defined according to the DODI 1400.25, Vol.1232 as: For a military member whose duty station is in a foreign area, the member's spouse or unmarried dependent child. For a civilian US employee as defined by section 2105 of Title 5, United States Code, the employee's spouse, domestic partner, or unmarried dependent child, or unmarried child of the employee's spouse or domestic partner. A family member must physically reside with his or her sponsor to receive family member preference.
