    The New Mexico VA Health Care System (NMVAHCS), is seeking a full time Physician Assistant to work at the Raton Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) in Raton, New Mexico.

    Responsibilities

    CORE CLINICAL PRACTICE/GENERAL PROFICIENCY: Performing and recording histories and physical examinations.

    Providing and coordinating comprehensive care for assigned patients in your assigned care setting including (but not limited to) documenting progress notes and summaries in the patient's medical record, ordering of therapeutic regimens as well as appropriate diagnostic tests, documenting a discharge summary (the collaborating physician must write a discharge note, or cosign the discharge summary in accordance with Joint Commission standards), counseling of patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, and recommended treatment(s). May admit patients to their service with collaborating physician concurrence. May write Life Sustaining Treatment progress notes and orders, including DNAR/DNR orders.

    Other duties may include consent for and documenting procedures performed by the applicant, providing: insertion and removal of Foley catheters, IV's, nasogastric tubes, central lines, assist in the intraoperative care of patients, proctor/teach students as appropriate, and participate in clinical research.

    Performing emergency duties, carried out for patients in life-threatening situations where a physician is not immediately available. The applicant initiates these activities as needed until a physician or emergency medical personnel arrive.

    Qualifications

    To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 01/30/2020.

    Basic Requirements:
    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • English Language Proficiency: Physician Assistants appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
    • Education or Training: Candidates must meet the following: (1) Graduate of a PA training program, or of a surgical assistant program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations; and (2) Possess a Bachelor's degree from an accredited PA training program or in another health sciences related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education?
    • Certification: Current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician's Assistants (NCCPA) is required for employment in VHA. (2) Recent PA graduates who are eligible to take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) may be employed by the VA on a temporary basis (38 U.S.C. 7405), for a period not to exceed two years.
    Grade Determinations:
    GS-09 Full Grade. None beyond the basic requirements in paragraph 2 of this standard.

    GS-11 Intermediate Grade. In addition to meeting the basic requirements, candidates must meet all requirements described in this standard for Full Grade through VA employment or non-VA PA positions with equivalent scope and complexity. Individuals appointed or advanced to Intermediate Grade will have demonstrated the ability to analyze and solve more complex medical problems and meet the following requirements:
    (1) Experience / Education
    (a) 1 year of professional practice as a PA; or
    (b) Successful completion of a PA post-graduate residency program accredited by ARC-PA or by the U.S. Armed Forces; or
    (c) A Master's degree from a PA training program certified by ARC-PA or in another health-related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

    GS-12 Senior Grade. In addition to meeting the basic requirements, candidates must meet all requirements described in this standard for Intermediate Grade through VA employment or non-VA PA positions with equivalent scope and complexity. Individuals appointed or advanced to Senior Grade will have demonstrated the behaviors or responsibilities listed in one or more of the following categories: Clinical Proficiency, Education, Professional Development, Management/Administrative, and Research, as applicable to the assignment
    (1) Experience / Education
    (a) 3 years of professional practice as a PA; or
    (b) 2 years of professional practice as a PA and successful completion of a PA post-graduate residency program accredited by ARC-PA or by the U.S. Armed Forces; or
    (c) 2 years of professional practice as a PA and a Master's degree from a PA training program certified by ARC-PA or in another health-related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education; or
    (d) A Doctoral degree in a health-related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U. S. Department of Education.

    GS-13 Chief Grade In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, candidates must meet the following:
    (1) Experience / Education
    (a) After 5 years of professional practice as a PA, candidates must able to demonstrate a high level of clinical expertise, leadership ability, and the ability to function with a high degree of autonomy. Further, the PA candidate for Chief Grade will have demonstrated all the requirements of one or more of the following categories: Management/Administrative, Clinical Proficiency, Professional Development and Research.
    (b) The minimum education for this grade is a Master's Degree from a PA training program accredited by ARC-PA or in a health-related field of study. However, experience as a PA may be substituted for the Master's degree where an applicant has an equivalent knowledge of the profession and has successfully undertaken a combination of difficult or complex assignments in several clinical, administrative, research and educational arenas which required a high degree of competence.

    The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-13. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-09 to GS-13.

    Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting (up to 44 lbs); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking and standing up to 2 hours; kneeling and repeated bending up to 1 hour.
