As a CONSERVATOR, you will:
Examine records of historical significance by various methods to determine (1) their structure and materials, (2) their condition (e.g., extent of damage, degree and state of deterioration), causes of damage (e.g., inherent vice, exposure to light, and abuse due to physical handling or improper housing) and (3) previous treatments (mends, fills, reinforcement with silk or sizing, etc.).
Work independently in planning and carrying out treatment and research projects, exercising a high degree of initiative and technical judgment in developing methods of operation and in resolving most technical problems. Duties involve performing a variety of conservation functions in connection with the broad range of holdings or services performed.
Prepares condition reports describing physical attributes of the media and support of each record: evidence of damage or loss.
The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
For the GS-12, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes:
-Experience determining the nature and condition of archival records requiring stabilization and conservation treatment; AND
-Experience preparing written treatment proposals for records, including selection of treatment options, procedures, methods and techniques, and materials to be used; AND
-Experience carrying out conservation treatment on paper, books and/or photographs; AND
-Experience with developing preservation theories and best practices that ensure the proper storage, handling, and use of records based on both experience and research of new/upcoming techniques; AND
-Experience developing and presenting training to others regarding conservations and techniques.
For the GS-11, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-9 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes:
-Experience determining the nature and condition of archival records requiring stabilization and conservation treatment; AND
-Experience preparing written treatment proposals for records, including selection of treatment options, procedures, methods and techniques, and materials to be used; AND
-Experience advising others on current preservation practices and policies related to the care, housing, and handling of archival records
OR
You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related
OR
You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. (If qualifying on a combination of education and experience, only education beyond the first 2 years of graduate studies can be used as qualifying.)
