- Serve as one of the chief scientists for EPAs Airborne Spectral Photometric Environmental Collection Technology (ASPECT) program.
- Design, operate, and/or oversee various detection systems, to include the development of new algorithms as appropriate.
- Oversee data collection, data management and data transmission, while ensuring that required quality assurance and quality control procedures are implemented.
- The incumbent will serve as a liaison between the Consequence Management Advisory Division (CMAD) and other Agency offices and with other Federal Agencies on issues related to atmospheric detection systems.
Occasional travel - You may be required to travel 25% or less of each month.

You need a degree or combination of education and experience as described below to qualify for this position.
In addition to the educational requirements, we are looking for at least one year of specialized experience related to this position as described below:
To qualify for the GS-14 level, you need to have at least one year of full-time experience equivalent to the GS-13 level defined as experience using atmospheric detection technologies, remote sensing systems or radiological detection systems for responding to chemical or radiological incidents.
Your answers to the online assessment will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas:
- Ability to serve as a recognized expert in using atmospheric detection systems, remote sensing systems or radiological detection systems for responding to incidents involving possible releases of unknown materials.
- Ability to provide support, leadership and oversight to teams of technical response personnel during emergency responses.
- Knowledge of atmospheric detection systems.
- Knowledge of theory of operation, instrument design, and modes of operation for atmospheric imaging systems.
- Skill in generating new hypotheses, developing new concepts, and planning and evaluating long range program and projects.
- Ability to make decisions using best professional judgment with limited information.
- Skill in written communication.
- Skill in oral communication.

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in:
Physical Science - Series 1301:
Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Health Physics - Series 1306:
Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.
Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described above.
