    Summary

    This position is located in Bedford, IN on the Hoosier National Forest.

    Incumbent is responsible for the development and scheduling of annual work plans and the execution of field operations relating to the trails program.

    Responsibilities

    • Responsible for developing and carrying out operating plans for trails maintenance, rehabilitation, reconstruction, and construction projects based on approved direction in land management plans.
    • Implements trail, and/or wilderness and bridge construction and reconstruction projects.
    • Participates in the identification and planning for future trail construction, reconstruction, maintenance, and restoration projects.
    • Performs trail log, condition, and prescription surveys.
    • Administers a recreation area with responsibility for developing and carrying out operations plans for the use, improvement and maintenance for developed and dispersed recreation sites.
    • Provides liaison with community organizations and interest groups to stimulate interest in and utilization of forest recreation facilities.

    Qualifications

    Specialized Experience Requirement:

    For the GS-05: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as one of more of the following: Performed routine maintenance at dispersed recreation sites including site cleanup and naturalizing; performed routine maintenance of trails using power and hand tools; contacted user groups to provide wilderness philosophy, regulations, and current camp or fire restrictions; collected monies for sale of maps; issued campfire permits.
    OR
    Have a bachelor's degree or 4 years of successfully completed education above high school (120 semester/180 quarter hours) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources, outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science (no more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable);
    OR
    Have combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (in excess of the first 60 semester/90 quarter hours) and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

    For the GS-06: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as one of more of the following: Assisted staff in planning and implementing the logistics required for completion of wilderness projects, such as trail maintenance and reconstruction projects, habitat restoration projects, and invasive plant surveys; ensured recreation/wilderness areas are operated, used, and maintained in accordance with trail and/or wilderness management plans; served on a crew responsible for trail maintenance surveys and documenting trail work needs in data management systems; followed trail maintenance schedules for the reconstruction and construction of trails and wilderness/recreation sites.
    OR
    Have one full year (18 semester/27 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position (such as forestry, range management, agriculture);
    OR
    Have combinations of graduate level education that is directly related to the position and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

    For the GS-07: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as one of more of the following: Planned and implemented the logistics required for completion of wilderness projects, such as trail maintenance and reconstruction projects, habitat restoration projects, and invasive plant surveys; patrolled trails to ensure areas were operated, used, and maintained in accordance with trail management plans; conducted trail maintenance surveys and documented trail work needs in data management systems; served as a forest protection officer or similar type position which includes conducting investigations, collected evidence and preparing case reports on violations.
    OR
    Have one full year (18 semester/27 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position (such as forestry, range management, agriculture);
    OR
    Have combinations of graduate level education that is directly related to the position and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    For GS-06 and GS-07: TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
