    FACILITIES MANAGEMENT & SECURITY SERVICES (FMSS) DIVISION customers are IRS employees. FMSS identifies and delivers value-added, cost efficient, shared service solutions, that facilitate the success of the IRS mission

    WHAT DOES AN ELECTRICAL ENGINEER DO? As an Electrical Engineer at the IRS you will use your highly technical background to provide expert technical advice to the IRS on a variety of projects. You will advise management concerning major aspects of highly technical alteration and construction projects.

    As an Electrical Engineer you will:

    • Design or coordinate or evaluate a broad range of electrical engineering projects, applying technical expertise to the identification, planning, acquisition, design, and installation of unique electrical power, communication and computer systems
    • Use your highly technical background to provide expert technical advice to the IRS on a variety of projects

    You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement:

    BASIC REQUIREMENTS
    : (All grade levels)
    Four (4) year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher professional engineering degree. The curriculum must: 1) be in a school of engineering accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) or 2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: a) Statics, dynamics, b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships), c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics, d) thermodynamics; e) electrical fields and circuits; f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. OR
    A combination of education and experience. The education must include courses equivalent to a major in engineering, as shown above. To be qualifying your experience must be sufficient to demonstrate: Thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering, and a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.

    This must be demonstrated by meeting one (1) of the following:
    1. Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico. 
    2. Written Test showing evidence of having successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination, or any other written test required for professional registration. 
    3. Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences that included the courses specified in the basic requirements. 
    4. Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field, e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a degree in engineering, provided that you have had at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance.

    In addition to the above, you must meet the requirements described below:
    GS-13 LEVEL: You must have 1 year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes accomplishment of electrical engineering projects that required a wide range of knowledge of electrical engineering principles, theories, concepts, methods, and techniques pertinent to the position to be filled. This knowledge is generally demonstrated by assignments where the applicant analyzed a number of alternative approaches in the process of advising management concerning major aspects of highly technical alteration and construction projects. Experience in directly supporting a data center with the design, maintenance and operational reliability reviews of uninterruptible power supply (UPS) , Generator, Switchgear and distribution systems. Experience with the investigation of data center infrastructure failures and the development of associated corrective actions.

    - The experience may have been gained in the public sector, private sector or Volunteer Service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

    : Your application will be evaluated in the following areas:  Building and Construction, Design, Electrical Engineering, Mental Visualization, Oral Communication/Speaking, Planning and Evaluating, Problem Solving, Project Management, Teamwork and Writing. Category rating will be used to rank and select eligible candidates. If qualified, you will be assigned to one of three quality level categories, (i.e., A = Superior, B = Highly Qualified, C= Qualified) depending on your responses to the online questions, regarding your experience, education, and training related to this position. Your rating may be lowered if your responses to the online questions are not supported by the education and/or experience described in your application.
    Veterans' preference is applied after applicants are assessed.
