    Summary

    This position is located at the National Soil Erosion Research Laboratory in West Lafayette, Indiana.

    The IT Specialist position will provide database, geographic information systems and application software development support for NSERL research projects. The incumbent also provides general computer support to the NSERL and the Location Office in addition to the Livestock Behavior Research Unit and Crop Production and Pest Control Research Unit.

    Responsibilities

    • Schedules, monitors and verifies the integrity of servers and/or desktop backups and restores files as needed.
    • Provides computer support for PCs and Macs, including troubleshooting hardware and software.
    • Configures, maintains and troubleshoots the following related to IT systems and infrastructure: Windows servers; switches; firewalls for LAN/WAN connectivity; Linux servers; and software tools.
    • Assists staff with software development, databases and GIS analysis.
    • Works with customers to document and resolve data issues.
    • Serve as liaison between ARS personnel and the Purdue University Information Technology staff.

    Qualifications

    Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

    Applicants must have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below:

    Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

    At the GS-07 level:

    Qualifying experience for GS-7 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-5 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience providing IT support including desktop computer operations, administrative management software and troubleshooting operational problems; monitoring IT security weaknesses and the integrity of servers; working with customers and users to solve issues related to computer hardware and software; and modifying or developing software applications.

    OR

    Education: Successful completion of 1 full year of graduate level education leading to a degree in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management or degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks.

    OR

    Superior Academic Achievement in a curriculum that is qualifying for this position (see degree information above).

    OR

    At least 1 year of combined graduate education and experience as described above.

    At the GS-09 level:

    Qualifying experience for GS-9 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-7 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience providing IT support including desktop computer operations, administrative management software and troubleshooting operational problems; applying updates and patches on local servers and firewalls ensuring that PC's have the latest security protection; working with customers and users to solve issues related to computer hardware and software; and designing and developing software applications.

    OR

    Education: Successful completion of a Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management or degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks.

    A combination of education and experience as described above.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
