    Summary

    The candidate selected will provide technical assistance and a wide range of facility support activities for the NIST Center for Neutron Research.

    Responsibilities

    The incumbent will be responsible for painting/filling radiation shielding. Filling liquid nitrogen dewars. Maintaining cryogenic filter supply. Ensuring instruments are supplied with nitrogen and helium gas. Assisting in office moves/room setups. Packing and unpacking of scientific equipment. Ordering supplies from the metal, general storeroom and vendors. Operating basic hand and machine shop tools. Delivering and picking up various materials from the main shops, shipping and receiving. Organization of shipping and receiving area. Responsible for overseeing fastener and surplus inventory programs. Other general technical support as needed.

    Qualifications

    To qualify, all applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

    Successful completion of a full 4-year course study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in an appropriate field of engineering, construction, or industrial technology; or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of course such as those shown above. If you are qualifying based on education, you MUST submit copies of your unofficial transcripts with your application.

    OR

    One year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at the GS-4 level (ZT-I at NIST). Specialized experience is defined as experience using hand and machine shop tools to maintain mechanical and/or electromechanical systems.

    OR

    A combination of education and specialized experience as outlined above.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    This position allows you to qualify and be considered based on your education.     How You Will Be Evaluated

    Your resume, optional cover letter and supporting documentation will be reviewed to determine if you meet the minimum qualifications for the position.     The scored occupational questionnaire will evaluate you on the following competencies; please do not provide a separate written response:

    • Skill in maintenance and repair of mechanical and/or electromechanical equipment
    • Skill in using basic hand tools and machine shop tools
    • Ability to order, organize and maintain supplies and inventory for an organization
    • Ability to update, maintain and extract information from a database program
    • Ability to pack and unpack scientific and similar equipment
    • Ability to follow and interpret instructions while interacting with vendors, customers and staff
    • Knowledge and practice in handling radioactive or hazardous materials
