We are currently recruiting for a medical technologist, GS-644-7/9 to work as a generalist in all sections of the laboratory in the Pathology & Laboratory Service.
The GS-7 medical technologist is in an entry level position where experience as a medical technologist is not required beyond the basic requirements. Assignments at this level serve in an entry level MT career development position practicing under close supervision of an MT at or above the full performance level.
The GS-9 level is considered the full performance level for nonsupervisory positions. A MT at this level carries out the day-to-day operations in the laboratory. This would include routine testing, quality control, routine maintenance of instrumentation and troubleshooting. The MT develops, performs, evaluates, interprets, correlates and validates the accuracy of laboratory procedures and results ensuring all laboratory regulatory requirements are met. Testing procedures are performed on a variety of biological specimens and/or environmental samples using manual or automated techniques, following practices and regulations governing biosafety and biosecurity in the workplace. These require a broad exercise of independent judgment and responsibility, including organizing and setting priorities with minimal technical supervision.
The medical technologist meets the needs of customers while supporting VA missions. Consistently communicates and treats customers (veterans, their representatives, visitors, and all VA staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner. Provides the customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures. Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately.
The medical technologist keeps the supervisor informed of progress, potentially controversial matters, or far-reaching implications. Completed work is reviewed only from an overall standpoint in terms of feasibility, compatibility with other work, and effectiveness in meeting requirements or expected results.
Work Schedule: Multiple shifts; Rotating shifts-day, evening, and midnight including weekends and holidays.
