    Responsibilities

    At the (insert 1st grade level) level, you will:

    - Assist with varied but routine environmental protection work to support higher level members or the branch or division for planning of program management of environmental programs.

    - Review and summarize a variety of environmental program information data for supervisor's use in preparing reports and programs evaluations.

    - Assist higher graded specialists by performing clear cut assignments.

    - Work as a team member on a special project for study teams performing day-to-day staff operations.

    At the GS-5 level, you will:

    - Review files, records and other documents to compile and summarize information pertaining to environmental programs and/or compliance reviews.

    - Provide information and assistance on procedural requirements and formats for filing various applications, permits, grant applications or compliance-related forms and documents.

    - Collect, track, compute, and summarize statistical information and data in chart and narrative forms.

    - Conduct information searches and review references and guidelines to resolve problems and questions.

    Occasional travel - You may be required to travel 1 to 5 days per month.

    This position is designated as Low Risk and requires a background investigation. Unless an appropriate background investigation is already on record with the Office of Personnel Management, you must undergo a background investigation.

    Qualifications

    In addition to the eligibility requirements for the Pathways Internship Program, Pathways Interns qualify for an initial appointment based on their educational achievements as described below:  

    To qualify for the GS-04 level, you need to have completed two full academic years of post-high school study or an associate’s degree.

    To qualify for the GS-05 level, you need to have completed four academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    Pathways Internship Program:
    This program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while still in school and while getting paid for the work performed.  The position must be related to the student’s academic field of study or the student’s career interests.  Additional information about the Internship Program can be found at: USAJOBS Information Sheet.

    Interns without not-to-exceed dates who successfully complete the program may be converted to a term or permanent position with greater promotion potential in the competitive service without further competition.

    If you are selected, travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid by EPA.  Any travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting to work in this position will be your responsibility.

    Except in special circumstances, those new to the federal government will be hired at the starting salary (step 1) of the applicable grade range listed above.
