The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a fire dispatcher in support of a wide range of fire suppression activities.
Determines appropriate resource response to incidents and requests from the field and dispatches personnel, equipment, aircraft, and/or supplies; performs, and directs others, in receiving fire reports, determining location, land status, and current fire information; processes and interprets weather information to determine burning indices, preparedness and staffing levels for suppression and aviation resources.
Reviews internal operating procedures and systems, makes recommendations for improvement; updates/develops operating plans and mobilization guides; provides critical logistical support information to supervisor and makes recommendations concerning the efficient uses of available resources.
Provide guidance, orientation, and training to other dispatchers.
Physical Demands: The work involves long hours of sitting, intense concentration and working at peak proficiency/intensity levels with irregular breaks and mealtimes. The duties of this position create a highly stressful environment during peak activity, requiring the ability to keep calm in emergency situations. Must be able to cope with the pressure of meeting time frames and changing priorities. Mental concentration and accuracy are required.
Work Environment: Work is performed primarily in an office setting. During peak activity, increased radio traffic, numerous ringing phones, and conversations result in high noise levels, which require a high level of concentration to perform duties. This creates a high stress work environment.
Occasional travel - May require travel to Nevada State Office and other Districts for meetings and training and possible travel to out-of-state locations.

This position falls under the Technical and Medical Support Group Qualification Standard and Individual Occupation Requirements for the Forestry Technician Series (0462).

For GS-06: One year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least GS-05 in the federal service, with the basic processes, methods, and procedures associated with fire dispatch while working in a dispatch center or during wildland firefighting operations; OR have one full year (18 semester hours) of graduate level education related to range technician work such as a major study in forestry, range management, agriculture or a subject-matter field directly related to this position; OR an equivalent combination of specialized experience and education.
For GS-07: One year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least GS-06 in Federal service, resolving conflicts in firefighting resource requirements, providing training and guidance to less experienced personnel, providing supervisors with recommendations for process improvement, and developing solutions to irregular or problem situations gained while working in a dispatch center or during wildland firefighting operations; OR have one full year (18 semester hours) of graduate level education related to range technician work such as a major study in forestry, fire science or a subject-matter field directly related to this position; OR an equivalent combination of specialized experience and education.
This position is subject to the Interagency Fire Program (IFPM) Standard and Guide selective placement factors for a Fire Logistics Dispatcher (Senior Fire Dispatch).
SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR:
This position requires special qualifications that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor(s) will be rated not qualified.
Selective Factor: 90 Day Prior Firefighting Experience Requirement (resume must support):
The Department of the Interior defines wildland firefighting experience as; on-the-line wildland firefighting experience gained through containment, control, suppression, or use of wildland fire.
This experience can be met by serving in a temporary, seasonal, or equivalent private sector fire position for no less than 90 days. Periods of wildland firefighting experience, gained through militia and rural fire departments, can also be credited, as long as the total amount of this experience equates to at least 90 days.
Wildland fire is defined as any non-structure fire that occurs in the wildland. Two distinct types of wildland fire have been defined and include wildfire and prescribed fire:
Wildfire - An unplanned ignitions or prescribed fires that are declared wildfires.
Prescribed Fire – Planned ignitions. This description includes only fire line experience on a Prescribed Fire; it does not include experience in the planning stages. Prescribed fire experience must be supplemented by fire suppression experience in order to be creditable as previous wildland firefighting experience.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

While secondary positions are not subject to the maximum entry age (MEA) policy, the selectee must have prior service in a primary position and meet the transfer requirement for movement from a primary to secondary position to be eligible for special retirement coverage. How You Will Be Evaluated
