ResponsibilitiesThis position serves as the Nutrition and Food Services Room Service Transporter. The incumbent is responsible for delivery of meal carts and other requests to the nursing units in a timely and efficient manner. The incumbent will also assist in loading trays onto the meal delivery carts and monitoring the time to adhere to policy regarding delivery time frames. This position assists with tray assembly, retrieves soiled trays from nursing units and works in the dish room to clean and sanitize dishes, pots and pans. food carts. dish machine and other areas as assigned. Incumbent will deliver nourishment and other diet requisitions to the Room Service Ambassadors on the nursing units. The incumbent will follow established procedures in service operations including safe food handling. preparation. storage and delivery. The incumbent may be scheduled on alternating shifts to accommodate the mission of Nutrition and Food Services. Incumbent provides quality customer service. establishes and maintains effective working relationships with patients, visitors and staff throughout the VAMHCS. Good communication skills are essential for this position.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work involves continuous periods of standing and walking on tile floors throughout the medical center. Hand dexterity is necessary in the utilization of machines used to prepare food. Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds unassisted and more with assistance. Frequently stoops, reaches, lifts, bends or carries food and kitchen equipment.
The work is performed in a hospital kitchen where the steam and heat from cooking and dishwashing equipment often cause high temperatures and humidity. The work area can be noisy from food service activities and there is a danger of slipping on floors where food or beverages have been dropped. Food service workers are regularly exposed to hot liquids, sharp cutting blades, hot work surfaces and extreme temperature changes when entering walk in refrigerators or freezer units. Subject to prolonged periods of standing. Must abide by personal hygiene standards and safe work procedures such as wearing a hairnet or hat, beard guard if needed and a clean uniform daily. This position involves shift work and requires duty on weekends and holidays.Incumbent may be exposed to contagious diseases while working in a hospital setting.
