    Summary

    This position is located in the Directorate for Medicine, Department of Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, Respiratory Care Services Clinic.

    Tour of duty is 12 hour shifts from 0645 - 1915 with alternating weekends.

    A Respiratory Therapist License is highly recommended.

    Position is being filled using EHA - Critical Need Health Care Occupations.

    Responsibilities

    • Perform pulmonary diagnostic testing such as: spirometry, lung volumes, single breath diffusing capacity, cardio-pulmonary exercise, metabolic measurements, oxygen titration, 6 minute walk, bronchoscopy assistance, etc.
    • Assist physicians in both the diagnosis and in guiding therapy of patients with cardiopulmonary disorders.
    • Explain test and technique to patient before administering pulmonary test.
    • Recommend changes of treatment plans to physician based on patient assessment and ability.
    • Evaluate effectiveness of patient instructions and coaching during diagnostic testing procedures to obtain valid test results according to American Thoracic Society standards.
    • Use assessment and critical thinking skills to assess respiratory status of patients prior to respiratory procedures.
    • Provide routine and complex pulmonary diagnostic testing procedures for inpatient and outpatient military population.
    • Select and check proper dosage and methods of administration of medications to patients.
    • Identify interactions of drugs to determine therapy effectiveness and any adverse reactions.
    • Take appropriate action in response to patient distress or medical emergency.
    • Recognize and report critical laboratory results immediately to physician.
    • Set up and operate complex diagnostic pulmonary equipment (including blood gas analyzers).
    • Calibrate, clean and maintain diagnostic equipment to assure accurate performance.
    • Document all procedures into an electronic medical record for physician interpretation.

    • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
    • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
    • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
    • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons.
    • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
    • This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

    In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.     Specialized Experience: To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience involves work such as: performing arterial blood gas draw and analysis; settomg up, operating, and maintaining ventilator equipment; administering nebulizer medication treatment; and assisting with bronchoscopy.
    This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

    Education Substitution for Specialized Experience: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience (listed above) if they have at least one and a half years (27 semester hours) of graduate education that is directly related to the work of the position, in fields such as, Respiratory Therapy or Respiratory Care. Note: If you are using education to qualify, you must upload a copy of your transcripts with your application package showing you meet the education requirement.

    Combination of Experience and Education Substitution for Specialized Experience: If you have some, but not all, of the experience or education described above, you may still qualify by combining the amount of creditable experience and education that you possess. To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education above 1 year (18 semester hours) by 9. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. Note: If you are using education to qualify in any way, you must upload a copy of your transcripts with your application package.

    NOTE: Graduate from an AMA approved program by the National Board of Respiratory Care in Respiratory Therapy and a license as a Respiratory Therapist is preferred/recommended but not required for referral purposes. If you have either or both of these, please address it on your resume.
