The Optometrist functions as an integral part of the eye care team. They are responsible for participating in all aspects of the Optometry program, including clinical, administrative & academic components.
The primary duties & responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to: delivering high quality primary eye & vision care services; examining for & prescribing corrective lens, ordering diagnostic imaging & laboratory studies; preparing referrals for diagnosis, treatment & management of systemic & ocular conditions revealed through optometric examination. Provide patient & family education regarding ocular health issues. Primary optometric eye & vision care; emergency care, evaluating/managing/triaging emergent, non-surgical eye conditions; problem-oriented care, managing patients referred with complaints typical of routine eye care disorders; preventive health services, performing mandated examinations such as diabetic retinopathy & glaucoma screenings. Clinical procedures, such as: medical & ocular history; visual acuity measurement; pupillary function testing; color vision testing; extraocular muscle function & binocularity testing; refractive & accommodative testing; external examination of the eye & adnexal structures; biomicroscopic evaluation of the ocular adnexa, anterior, and/or posterior segments of the eye, including gonioscopic & fundus lens evaluation; ophthalmoscopic, tonometric, & perimetric evaluations; collaborate with other optometrists, ophthalmologists, nursing staff, technicians & administrators to facilitate operations within the service to meet common goals; perform the administrative components of patient care management, including timely completion of progress notes, consults & encounters for all patient; provide clinical coverage at the North Little Rock Eye Clinic The incumbent is to have a high level of flexibility & commitment to meet the dynamic needs of an evolving patient care system.

- Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
- Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
- Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience: Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification is desired. If selected for this position, per VHA Directive 1177, you must possess current BCLS certification as you will provide direct clinical care to patients in this position.
Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.
Physical Requirements: Requires moderate lifting (15-44) pounds, pulling, pushing, reaching over shoulder, use of fingers, walking, standing, kneeling, bending, near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/50 and to 20/100 in the other, ability to distinguish basic colors, hearing (aid permitted).

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan reimbursement program. If selected for this position you must meet specific individual eligibility requirements, and submit your application within four months of appointment. The final award amount (up to $200,000 ) and eligibility period (one to five years) is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services office.
Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of 26 days per leave year (1 day per pay period).
