This position is located in the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI), Smithsonian Institution. Sets short- and long-term plans and schedules for the museum's magazine production efforts and develops, directs, and evaluates all facets associated with the research, writing, publication, and marketing of American Indian Magazine under the direction of the Editor in Chief and with the support of the Managing Editor. Provides proposed story ideas and production schedules for discussion and approval to maintain the consistent pace of the quarterly print and digital magazine product platforms.
Performs editorial review of all manuscripts and other copy material for cultural sensitivity, content, accuracy, appropriateness, journalistic standards, and writing style. Recommends ways for authors to improve manuscripts before the editing process; ensures copy and content are properly edited, and that design elements serve the needs and requirements of each article. Assists in image research or rights and permissions work as applicable in collaboration with the magazine's contract researcher and authors.
Writes copy, which requires attentiveness to style, conciseness, and factual accuracy. All writing is expected to be of the highest quality, communicating the museum's mission and activities in a lively, accessible fashion.
- Conducts qualitative and quantitative research in support of content development and fact checking for a variety of museum projects, and works with curators, authors, and others to ensure error-free copy.

You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position Specialized experience is defined as researching, writing, editing, and proofreading a variety of print and electronic projects (newspapers, magazines, press releases, blogs, books, speeches, etc.) for the public; employing print production experience for publications projects, and ensuring that all projects conform to content development and educational standards.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

How You Will Be Evaluated
Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above. The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:
- Knowledge of the principles and methods for developing print production schedules, to manage project resources and coordinate work among all parties (writers, editors, photographers, curators, consultants, designers, publishers, and distributors).
- Knowledge of the editorial process to include knowledge of the publishing industry and a working familiarity with the Associated Press Style and Chicago Manual of Style or other recognized style books.
- Knowledge of the principles of editing and writing in order to assist authors with works in progress and ensure that NMAI's publications are in accord with the museum's standards of scholarly and literary merit, and appropriate in presentation, organization, and tone for their intended purpose.
- Ability to utilize correct English grammar, punctuation, and spelling, as well as standard writing styles, to communicate information in a succinct and organized manner; and to produce written information that is appropriate for the intended audience.
- Knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods required in the development of the textual or illustrative components of projects, fulfilling the museum's educational imperative to communicate accurately about the diversity and complexity of Native cultures.

Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above.
Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree.
