Interns must work a minimum of 400 hours, not to exceed a total of 640 hours. Part-time interns are required to work 24-32 hours a week.
The anticipated start date for these intern positions is September/October 2018. Interns may have an opportunity for a permanent position based on a successful intern experience (comprised of a minimum of 400 hours) and successful completion of degree requirements. The ability to convert to a permanent or term appointment with 400 hours of work experience is contingent upon budgetary conditions and staffing needs at the time of eligibility.

Interns will work on various assignments within one of GAO's Administrative Professional and Support Staff (APSS) offices:
Applied Research and Methods (ARM) Library Services: Interns will assist with basic duties for library services that include conducting reference and research, acquiring information resources for GAO, organizing and making information resources accessible, creating subject guides on topics such as accounting and finance, economics, education, healthcare, national defense, natural resources, public policy, transportation, telecommunications.
Chief Administrative Office (CAO): Interns will work with internal stakeholders to collect and analyze data to spot trends and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of internal GAO operations for CAO administrative functions, including information technology, human capital, infrastructure operations, field operations, internal communications, budget and financial operations.
Chief Administrative Office (CAO)/Special Assist (Telework): The intern will research external public and private organizations and work with internal stakeholders to collect and benchmark telework best practices. Intern will also work with internal stakeholders on GAO culture initiatives and develop a method of tracking the status of recommendations.
Congressional Relations (CR): Interns will identify and monitor the status of legislation; prepare records of reports required by statute or requested by Members of Congress for review by GAO’s Executive Committee; conduct research regarding GAO’s impact on legislation and Congressional oversight.
Continuous Process Improvement (CPI): Interns will support process improvement and change management activities including gathering and analyzing data, documenting work processes, documenting business needs for mission systems, helping to facilitate and document results of focus groups, and creating written communications.
Human Capital Office (HCO): Interns will support the Human Capital Office by performing a full-range of technical work assignments in processing personnel and payroll actions that are interrelated and/or non-standard.
Infrastructure Operations (IO): Interns will perform analytical studies focused on evaluating the effectiveness of various business operations, processes, and programs in the subject areas of facility management, security and emergency management, and records management.
Financial Management and Business Operations (FMBO): Interns will be responsible for maintaining, organizing, interpreting, and reviewing accounting documents and data for record management purposes; analyzing and reviewing data to ensure consistency; conducting analysis of GAO/FMBO’s best practices.
Learning Center (LC): Interns will provide assistance in learning development and delivery activities such as classroom logistics, course development, adjunct faculty program and recognition, course evaluations and analysis, design and development of learning products includes instructor-led training materials for classroom and webinars and eLearning interactive media, simulations, and videos.
Public Affairs (PA): Interns will assist with the product line steering committee and working groups; reaching new communications platforms and new features of existing communications platforms.
Strategic Planning and External Liaison (SPEL): Interns will support SPEL programs to include: advancing the use of foresight tools in support of GAO’s strategic planning process; managing GAO’s relationship with the International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions, and planning forums for Federal and State local accountability community partners.
Office of the General Counsel (OGC) Legal Support Services Branch (LSSB): Interns will assist management with a variety of administrative support functions for the Office of General Counsel including; covering front office and answering phones when needed, filing, copying, arranges meetings, securing space or arranging for audio and video conferencing; assist manager with updating attorney recruiting materials; utilizing automated systems, such as; the Law Schools recruiting system to enter and update recruiting profiles.
Office of the General Counsel (OGC) Procurement Law Control Group (PLCG): Intern will provide overall administrative support to the paralegals and attorneys, including opening and closing bid protest cases, processing correspondence, bid protest hearings, and assist the PLCG manager with various projects.
Opportunity and Inclusiveness (OI): Intern will work with O&I staff on projects related to diversity and inclusiveness issues and collect and analyze workforce data for trends in order to promote and maintain a work environment that is fair, unbiased, and inclusive.
Information Systems and Technology Services (ISTS), Budget, Acquisition, and Contracts Group (BACG): The Intern will assist in performing budget formulation and administration duties using Financial and MS office systems.
