    About the Position:
    This position is with the United States Army Corps Engineers, Mobile District,

    Black Water & Tombigbee Alabama-Coosa Project, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama

    .  The Black Warrior - Tombigbee and Alabama River Waterways Project is one of the largest Corps of Engineers' operations projects in the nation. The Project encompasses 758 miles of navigable waterway, nine locks and dams, two hydropower plants, four natural resource management offices and 62 Corps operated recreation areas.  Project operations have far-reaching effects on marine transportation, industry, mining, energy supply, hydropower, natural resources, recreational opportunities, and the environment. 

    Located along the banks of the Black Warrior River in west-central Alabama, Tuscaloosa is the fifth-largest city in Alabama. The city is also home to the first Mercedes Benz automotive assembly plant in North America. As home of the University of Alabama, the area offers a number of excellent attractions. Tuscaloosa also presents a number of outlets for water-related activities.  Fishing, boating and swimming are some of the most prized activities here. With its many restaurants, hotels, museums, and live music and theater venues – Tuscaloosa is sure to leave a lasting impression.

    Responsibilities

    -Assists Engineers in making repairs to main engines, small motors, generators, electrical systems, cranes, hydraulic lines, etc.

    -Perform preventative maintenance on all types of machinery.

    -Changes oil, fluids, and filters on various types of machinery including main engines and generators.

    -Inspects machinery to assure that it is running properly and is not overheating

    -Occasionally handles lines, towing cables and rigging

    Qualifications

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).  You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    Screen Out Element:  Ability to do the work of a Marine Oiler without more than normal supervision. Applicants must meet the screen out element to be considered for this position. Applicants should document experience in work performing a limited range of mechanical practices used in diagnosing, assembly, installation, repair, or maintenance work and am able to do routine jobs with assistance or simple tasks without assistance.

    Physical effort: Incumbent is required to exert moderate to heavy physical effort in operating and making repairs to engines and equipment. Parts, equipment, and systems are in hard to reach places requiring the incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds.

    Working Conditions: Work is performed primarily inside. There is some exposure to drafts, changing temperatures and noise. When working outside, incumbent is exposed to the inclement weather. Incumbent is frequently exposed to irritation or discomfort from dust, heat, fumes, and from hard, damp floors. Typically the machinery worked on is dirty, oily, or greasy.
