    The VA Black Hills Health Care System (VA BHHCS) is located in the beautiful Black Hills of Western South Dakota. South Dakota has No State Income Tax, has been named one of the Happiest and Safest States in the nation, is home to Top Ten Scenic Drives and Top Ten National Forests, features an Outdoor Life's Top City for Outdoor Enthusiasts and hosts the legendary annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
    VA BHHCS is where we live and work in rural small town settings, only minutes from Rapid City's shopping, dining, cultural, and entertainment venues. We offer rich history, including Mammoths and Prehistoric Civilizations, the 7th Cavalry, Deadwood, and Mount Rushmore. Hiking, fishing, rock climbing, canoeing, water skiing, golf, snowmobiling, hunting, camping, downhill and cross country skiing, motorcycling--the opportunities are endless. The Black Hills includes stunning landscapes such as Black Elk Peak, Bear Butte, the Badlands and the Needles Highway.
    VA BHHCS is a multi-campus health care system, with approximately 1300 employees, providing primary care, acute medicine, surgery, behavioral health, nursing home and domiciliary care from medical centers located at Fort Meade and Hot Springs, South Dakota as well as a staffed Community Based Outreach Clinic in Rapid City and numerous contracted and staffed clinics in Western South Dakota, Northern Nebraska and Eastern Wyoming. The VABHHCS is part of VA Midwest Healthcare System (VISN23), which includes facilities in Minnesota, North Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota.

    Responsibilities

    The VA Black Hills Health Care System consists of two medical centers located in Fort Meade and Hot Springs, South Dakota, as well as several community based outpatient clinics (CBOCs) located in South Dakota, Nebraska and Wyoming. The VHA primarily utilizes an electronic record for medical and administrative record storage. Although this organization maintains paper-based records which are located at the Hot Springs facility, documents are primarily integrated into the electronic record with minimal residual filing of the paper document. File room activities will vary with facility and include but are not limited to, filing records received, retrieval of records from off-site storage, general records maintenance activities, integrating paper records into the electronic records system, operation of a telephone switchboard and other records maintenance or improvement activities within the scope of this position. This position reports to the File Room Supervisor within the Operations Section of Health Administration Services.
    Various knowledge, skills and abilities are utilized in the course of daily work. These include general computer skills, keyboarding, good communication, proper grammar and writing skills, knowledge and ability to apply at least a basic knowledge of medical terminology and ability to recognize various types of documents for appropriate placement within the record.
    Incumbent maintains a controlled and professional work environment, observing privacy requirements, courtesy for staff utilizing a shared office space, facility environmental safety and participation in the Green Environment (GEMS) program. Incumbent participates in Section performance improvement activities related to their scope of work, team building and support activities, and maintains continuing education as mandated by this organization and scope of position.

    Physical Requirements: The work is primarily conducted in a sedentary position with repetitive motion and some twisting while imaging, with limited occasional bending, stretching, stooping, and walking. Lifting a maximum of 10 pounds.

    GS-04:
    To qualify for the GS-4 level, all applicants must possess at least one full year of general office experience, General experience is defined a progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work such as preparing correspondence, reports and/or office forms, answering telephone inquiries, filing, receiving, and distributing incoming documents and/or mail.
    OR,
    You may possess two full academic years (60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours) beyond high school at an accredited institution.
    OR,
    A combination of education and experience that totals 100% of the requirement for one year of general experience. The equivalent of 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours is equivalent to 6 months of general experience.
