    This position is located in the the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), Office of Analysis and Epidemiology (OAE), in Hyattsville, MD.

    Responsibilities

    As a Supervisory Statistician (Health), you will:

    • Independently plan, direct, and execute a comprehensive statistical research program that focuses on the enhancement of NCHS data systems through population health reporting and dissemination.
    • Design, plan, and direct statistical analytic research program through integration of data from multiple sources.
    • Prepare scientific reports and other user tools to disseminate scientific findings.
    • Present and convey scientific information at meetings and conferences.
    • Plan work to be accomplished by subordinates, sets and adjust short-term priorities, and prepares schedules for completion of work.
    • Represent NCHS in promoting Health, United States and its associated products as important data sources for analytical research.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    13. Supervisory position: Yes. Since this is a supervisory position, candidates must also have demonstrated or shown the potential to develop the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities. A supervisory probationary period may be required. Applicants should describe any previous experience or responsibilities which could be used in relation to the supervisory requirements of this position.

    Qualifications

    Basic Requirement for Statistician (Health), GS-1530:
    A. Degree that includes 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements should be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements of business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing.
    OR
    B. Combination of education and experience of courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience includes a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must also have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-14 level of difficulty and responsibility in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph.
    Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position which include experience planning, directing, assessing, and implementing statistical surveys designed to evaluate and monitor a wide range of health-related issues and science-based evaluations of survey data quality.
