    The United States Air Force's School of Advanced Air and Space Studies invites applications for a post-doctoral fellowship position in strategy and security studies. In this fellowship, the faculty member will have the opportunity to deliver curricula for a year-long, in-resident program designed to prepare field-grade officers from the Air Force, Air National Guard, Air Force Reserve, Sister Services, and international officers as strategists. Additionally, the school expects the fellow to publish (especially their dissertation) and contribute to the academy, and to learn/provide institutional service to the School, Air University, the Air Force, and the Department of Defense.

    Responsibilities

    • The focus of these positions is on teaching, scholarship and publication, and service to the University, the Air Force, and the nation. First and foremost, the aspiring applicant must be capable of becoming a highly capable instructor.
    • These duties include teaching graduate seminars, mentoring students (from academics to writing), and supervising research projects. SAASS expects the fellow to learn to create graduate-level curriculum and deliver material using a Socratic method.
    • The applicant must have the ability to conduct their own research and publish in peer-reviewed publications.
    • Service includes a range of activities from school administration to support for mission requirements at the University, the Air Force, or the Department of Defense.
    • The leadership at SAASS and Air University expect the fellow to travel, as directed, to support these activities.

    Qualifications

    Incumbent must possess a terminal degree in a relevant academic discipline such as international security studies, political science, history/military history, law (especially space law), and/or strategic studies. Degree must be awarded prior to 30 June 2018. The best candidate will have expertise in space policy and/or strategy. Expertise in cyber policy and/or strategy is also highly desired. The school desires the candidate have a strong desire to learn/provide curriculum creation, teaching, research methodology, original research, and scholarly publication.
    Academic rank for the position is post-doctoral fellow at the Assistant Professor level.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
    Knowledge of functions, structure, and operations of an accredited, graduate-level academic organization.
    Ability lo communicate both orally and in writing.
    Ability to leach graduate-level seminar courses in history, military history, political science, and national and international security studies.
    Ability to conduct graduate-level research in primary source materials and develop cogent arguments based on findings.
    Ability to guide graduate-level research in relevant source material and guide students to cogent arguments based on the findings.
    Ability to write and edit to publishable scholarly standards.

A "certification" letter should be on letterhead of the appropriate military branch of the service and contain (1) the military service dates including the expected discharge or release date; and (2) the character of service. The service member's military service dates are necessary in order to determine whether he or she meets the definition of "veteran" under 5 U.S.C. 2108(1). The "certification" must reflect the service member is expected to be discharged or released from active duty service in the armed forces under honorable conditions not later than 120 days after the date of submission. The "certification" must be signed by, or by direction of, the adjutant, personnel officer, or commander of your unit or higher headquarters and must indicate when your terminal leave will begin (if applicable), your rank, dates of active duty service, the type of discharge and character of service (i.e. honorable). Further, under paragraph (h) of the rule, agencies are required to verify a qualifying separation from military service prior to appointment, through the DD 214 or other appropriate documentation. Your preference and/or appointment eligibility will be verified prior to appointment. Active duty members that fail to provide a valid "certification" of service with their initial application will be found "not eligible." Military members may be appointed before the effective date of their military retirement/separation if member is on terminal leave.
