NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED: This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the National Guard. MACHINIST, WG-3414-8/11. This position is located at the 162nd Wing (Tucson, AZ) in the 162nd Aircraft Metals Technology Shop. The primary purpose of this position is to perform machining operations and welding to accomplish the manufacture and repair of aircraft components, tools, equipment, parts, and special tools. It requires the use of a variety of conventional, non-conventional, and/or computer numerical control machine tools and equipment. Also included in this position are some minor tool making duties. There is a requirement to periodically fabricate tools and jigs, but only for the specific purpose of carrying out duties in the manufacture and repair of aircraft components.

WG-08: Must possess at least 12 months of experience or training performing machining operations on conventional and CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machine tools to include aligning parts. Experience, education or training in the use of measuring instruments such as scales, micrometers, vernier calipers, height gages and various standard or preset snap, plug or ring gages. Must be able to follow detailed oral or written instructions.
WG-11: Must possess at least 18 months of experience or training performing the full range of machining operations on most types of conventional or CNC machine tools and their various attachments. Experience or training in planning and lay out work from blueprints, worksheets and other drawings that may have missing or incorrect information. Skill in applying shop mathematics in establishing needed dimensions, such as those required for chasing threads or machining angular surfaces; locating and marking surfaces and angles to be machined. Skill in programming machining operations, setting up and operating CNC machine tools. Knowledge of and ability to apply advanced shop mathematics such as geometric and trigonometric formulas to make computation for laying out work, machining pieces at unusual or compound angles, determining gear ratios pitch, angles and other similar exact or precision dimension.

How You Will Be Evaluated

1. Ability to perform all types of machining operations, independently plan the sequence of operation, lay out work, read and interpret blueprints, technical manuals and determine required adaptation of conventional and specialized machine tools.2. Skill in using many types of precision measuring instruments and equipment such as micrometers, vernier calipers, and dial test indicators.
3. Knowledge of various welding processes to include: TIG, MIG, Shielded-Arc, and Oxy-acetylene welding.
4. Ability to control work operations, accomplish adequate quantity and quality of work, and estimate materials and manpower to ensure production goals are met as provided through the supervisor.
5. Knowledge of and ability to apply advanced shop mathematic such as geometric and trigonometric formulas to make computations for laying out work, machining pieces at unusual or compound angles, and machine speeds and feeds to produce specified surface finishes of various raw materials.
6. Knowledge in the use of conventional and CNC equipment to perform a wide range of machining operations to produce quality aircraft parts, special tooling, and fixtures in accordance with engineer drawings to specified dimensions within .0005".
