VA Eastern Colorado HealthCare System (ECHCS) is complexity level 1a and provides a full range of state-of- the-art patient care services, and will soon be providing care in a new state-of-the-art hospital in Aurora, CO.  ECHCS provides tertiary care and services to over 87,000 patients and is a major referral center for veterans living in Wyoming, Montana, Kansas, and New Mexico. ECHCS serves as an educational and research center, it is highly affiliated with medical and educational institutions. Health Care Services are provided at 15 different geographically dispersed locations incorporating nine Community Based Outpatient Clinics, two Primary Care Telehealth Outpatient Clinics, one local and one remote Community Living Center, Homeless Veteran's Domiciliary, a Community Referral and Resource Center, a Polytrauma and Blind Rehabilitation Center and VA presence on two DOD bases; Fort Carson and U.S. Air Force Academy covering a geographical area of over 10,000 square miles. Duties

As a Histopathology Technician you must be able to independently function in multiple areas within the Anatomic Pathology laboratory, including histopathology, cytopathology, immunohistochemistry, special stains and the autopsy suite (morgue). Major duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited, to the following:

  • Accession autopsy, surgical pathology and cytology specimens
  • Perform routine and specialized histotechnology, cytology, and slide preparation
  • Performs histology techniques such as specimen embedding with an understanding of tissue orientation, tissue structure and any demarcations made by the pathologist or resident
  • Perform immunohistochemistry straining techniques using instrumentation
  • Perform special staining techniques using both manual and instrumentation
  • Perform grossing of biopsy specimens
  • Maintain detailed record keeping
  • Maintain various instruments to include processors, strainers, coverslipper, TP 2000 and TP 5000
  • Assist with fine needle aspirations
  • Process, cuts and stains frozen section specimens
  • Process and stain cytology specimens using Thin prep processors
  • Process, embed and section autopsy, surgical pathology and cytology specimen independently
  • Assist in renal biopsy collection
  • Send out tests and other duties assigned by the Anatomic Pathology Supervisor

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 am-4:30 pm, rotating weekends and holidays

                           Monday-Friday, 5:00 am-1:30 pm, with possible requirement to work off shifts/weekends
