Job Summary

The H.E.R.O Program is seeking candidates for a one-year, non-paid internship at computer forensics labs in more than 80 Department of Homeland Security, Immigration & Customs Enforcement (DHS/ICE) law enforcement offices throughout the United States. These internships are reserved for wounded, ill or injured service members who are either active, separated or retired from all service components. 

Before reporting to the field offices, candidates receive 3 weeks of training with the National Association to Protect Children regarding the issues surrounding Child exploitation and an additional 8 weeks of highly technical computer forensic training, all in an effort to provide candidates the tools necessary to assist federal agents in the fight against online child sexual exploitation. 


Who May Apply:

These positions are reserved for wounded, ill or injured armed service members and veterans who meet one of the following criteria:·

  • Currently on active duty, due to transition out of the service, and able to serve in the Operation Warfighter (OWF) Program.
  • Currently separated or retired and eligible under the Veteran Affairs (VA) Vocational Rehabilitation program.
  • Currently discharged from the service and a part or full time student enrolled in a 2 year, 4 year, graduate, and/or certificate program.

Organizational Location: This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement in over eighty (80) possible locations nationwide.

Relocation Expenses: Relocation expenses are not applicable.

This is a volunteer, non-compensated position. ( Any mention of grade level is meant to convey the level of experience gained if a selectee remains in this position through the full length of the internship.)


As a HERO Corps Volunteer, training will involve both familiarization with child protective techniques and law, as well as utilization of computer forensic tools to combat child abuse.  This internship involves:

  • Knowledge of child abuse, exploitation and protection
  • Knowledge of criminal and predator behavior
  • Overview of the Child Protection System, the Criminal Justice System and International Law
  • Role of the computer forensic analyst in the investigation of child predators

You will learn and utilize the following computer forensic techniques:

  • Preview hard drives using forensically sound procedures to scan for evidence.
  • Conduct analysis of internet artifacts.
  • Image and analyze Random Access Memory (RAM) on a live computer system
  • Analyze the Windows Registry to determine removable volumes that have been attached to the computer system
  • Examine Exchangeable Image File Format (EXIF) information embedded inside graphic images
  • Assist with conducting validation testing of computer forensic hardware and software.
