The Environment and Natural Resources Division (ENRD) is a component of the Department of Justice. With more than 700 employees in Washington, D.C., Anchorage, Denver, Sacramento, San Francisco and Seattle, we are the nation's environmental lawyer, and the largest environmental law firm in the country. We are responsible for protecting the use and development of America's natural resources and public lands by bringing charges against companies that violate environmental protection laws. We work closely with the Environmental Protection Agency to ensure that hazardous waste sites are cleaned up. We also represent the government when it needs to purchase private property for government use.

The San Francisco field office is conveniently located south of Market Street and near the Embarcadero. Many public transportation options are available to access the office for which we offer a transit subsidy.

 

This position is for a Student Trainee (Office Automation Clerk) under the Pathways Program. Job opportunities can range from part-time to full-time positions and may last as long as you are a qualified and eligible student. This is an Internship - Temporary, Not-to-exceed 1 year positions which may be extended so long as eligibility requirements continue to be met.

DUTIES:

In this position, you will perform clerical and administrative tasks such as:  

  • Performing work related to the gathering and development of briefing and research materials for senior managers in the Division. 
  • Coordinating routine clerical work in support of an organization where matters are handled informally or in face-to-face meetings. 
  • Determining the nature of callers' inquiries and referring technical questions to an appropriate staff member. 
  • Performing office automation work requiring the use of software applications and computer equipment. 
  • Preparing correspondence, reports, technical documents, graphs/charts, forms, and other office support materials. 
  • Assisting with other basic tasks related to office support services.


QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

In order to qualify candidates must meet the program requirements, educational requirements and typing proficiency listed below.  

Program Requirements: 

  • Be enrolled or formally accepted for enrollment as a full-time or part-time student into an accredited college or university* in a degree seeking program in a related field or  other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate. (See Education Requirements) 
  • Must be in good academic standing. 
  • If selected, must sign Student Pathways program agreement; furnish course registration information at the start of each school term; and provide verification of academic status (transcript) at the end of each academic term. 

 

Proficiency Requirement:  Applicant must be able to type 40 words per minute. Self- certified typing must be supported in your resume.
Education Requirements: In addition to the program requirements listed above candidates must meet the minimum education requirements to qualify for the 0399 series either at the GS-02, GS-03, or GS-04 level:


For the GS-0399-02: MUST have completed a high school or GED diploma  

For the GS-0399-03: MUST have completed 1 full academic year of post-high school study  

For the GS-0399-04: MUST have completed 2 full academic years of post-high school study or an associate's degree.
NOTE: An academic year of undergraduate education is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in an accredited college or university.

The Pathways Program provides an opportunity for students to work while attending school. Students are appointed to a position not-to-exceed one year.

 

Depending on your work schedule you will receive paid holidays, paid sick and annual (vacation) leave, and subsidized transportation. The nature of the duties does not have to be related to the student's academic/career goals. Students who are enrolled in the Pathways Program must maintain a 2.5 grade point average and be enrolled half-time in an accredited education program.

 

This is an Excepted Service appointment which may continue as long as the student continues to meet the eligibility requirements. Upon graduation, this position is eligible for conversion to a term or permanent appointment, but there is no guarantee that conversion will occur. Also, continued employment is not guaranteed.
