About the Agency

 

This position is with the Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC), the Navy’s principal agency filling the Navy’s needs for historical and heritage services. As an official Department of the Navy Museum, the Great Lakes Naval Museum's mission is to select, collect, preserve, and interpret the history of the United States Navy with particular emphasis on the Navy's only "boot camp" at Naval Station Great Lakes, Great Lakes, Illinois.

DUTIES:

·        Plan, research, and prepare original studies, monographs, briefings, booklets, articles, scripts, chronologies, exhibit labels, and other products that furnish detailed historical background and perspective to current and historic Navy issues.

·        Respond to historical inquiries from the command, other Navy and Defense Department units and organizations, veteran organizations, and the general public.

·        Provide interpretive and intellectual support for public outreach functions to include permanent and temporary exhibits, multimedia presentations, online features, tours, education programs, history reenactments, and historical presentations.


QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:

Possess a degree in History; or a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history.


Possess a combination of education and experience; courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
To qualify for the GS-09 grade level, applicants must have one year of specialized experience performing Historian work equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal Service performing research or other work in the field of history when such work requires a professional knowledge of established methods and techniques of historical research in the collection, evaluation, analysis or presentation of historical facts.  Specialized experience would include: conducting basic research on historical topics; collecting, analyzing, and evaluating historical facts and determining the relative importance of historical evidence; preparing basic history studies on specific topics.

To qualify for the GS-11 grade level, applicants must have one year of specialized experience performing Historian work equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal Service performing research or other work in the field of history when such work requires a professional knowledge of established methods and techniques of historical research in the collection, evaluation, analysis or presentation of historical facts.   Specialized experience would include: conducting primary and secondary source research on historical topics that research and detail a major historical topic with additional research and treatment of related topics; performing responsibilities that require use of historical judgment and ability to conduct extensive research, provide effective analysis, and deliver sophisticated oral and written communications; and planning, researching, and preparing original studies, monographs, briefings, booklets, articles, scripts, chronologies, exhibit labels, and other products that furnish detailed historical background and perspective to current and historic issues.

REQUIREMENTS:

Generally, current Federal employees applying for GS jobs must serve at least one year at the next lower grade level. This requirement is called time-in-grade.  All qualifications and time-in-grade requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement and clearly documented in your resume.

Musuem is a multi-story building without an elevator, requiring staff to use stairs.
