WHO MAY APPLY:  Applicants must maintain a permanent and exclusive residence within or contiguous (within 35 miles of Badlands National Park boundaries).  The applicant must document that their place of residence for the last 2 years lies within the 35-mile limitation, and the applicant must be dependent for livelihood primarily upon employment available within the Badlands National Park.

This is a full time temporary position, not-to-exceed 1 year, located at Badlands National Park, Interior, South Dakota. 

AREA INFORMATION: Badlands National Park is located in southwest South Dakota, 75 miles East of Rapid City (population 67,000), and 30 miles from Wall, Kadoka, and Phillip. Limited grocery shopping, service station, K-8 school and Post Office are located in interior, 2 miles from park headquarters. Shopping, medical and dental facilities, and schools K-12 are available in Wall, Kadoka, Phillip, and Rapid City. P ark housing will not be available. The area is a beautiful place to live and raise a family but winters can be harsh with occasional very cold temperatures, high winds and blizzard like conditions. Performs cleaning of vault toilets, collection of Solid Waste and recycle materials. Picks litter along roadsides, in pull outs, on board walks and in remote campground.  Removes snow by shovel, backpack blower, ATV plow, ATV broom and by walk behind snow blowers. Chips ice as directed, spreads ice melt chemicals by procedure. Cleans buildings as required.  Provides Housekeeping services for seasonal housing during the Motel season. Moves furniture and appliances as directed. Rarely assists other journeymen in Maintenance work. Operates various power equipment and various cleaning tools. Maintains tools and equipment according to instructions and performance of basic operator maintenance on park vehicles, and other power equipment. Will be required to lift and carry objects, tools, and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds over uneven terrain. Operates vehicles up to 9,000 lbs GVW in transporting of personnel and materials to and from work locations over park road and outside of the park boundaries. Maintains daily records of work and hours in accordance to park policy and submits to FMSS team in a timely manner. Must be proficient in the operation of ATV with broom and similar type equipment.

To qualify for this position, you must possess the basic qualifying experience listed below as well as selective factors as described in the occupational/assessment questionnaire.

Applicants must be physically fit and, as required in Office of Personnel Management Qualifications Handbook X-118C, and must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the elements listed in Section 25 of the Online Occupational Questionnaire to perform the duties of the position at the level for which they are applying.   Qualification requirement emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

Experience: There is no specific length of training or experience required. Selective Placement Factors: In addition to job elements listed above the applicant must

  • Must be contiguous to the area: reside within 35 miles of Badlands National Park boundaries, for the last 2 years (based on entry on duty date, April 2014)
  • Livelihood must be primarily dependent on employment within Badlands National Park.

    Physical Effort: The nature of this position requires climbing on ladders, scaffolds, and platforms and where surfaces to be coated, or the parts of systems worked on are hard to reach that require considerable standing, stooping, bending, and kneeling. It requires working overhead or in stretched, cramped, awkward, tiring, and uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time. Frequently lifts and carries items up to 40 pounds unassisted.

    Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside. Outside work exposes the employee to inclement weather, which includes, heat, cold, rain, and wind. Work entails frequent exposure to dirt, dust, and fumes may be present. Tasks require the employee to work under structures and on scaffolding, ladders, rooftops. Worker is subject to cuts, abrasions, and insect bites and wearing protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable.

    Driver's license: Applicants must possess a valid state driver's license. This position requires that you operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. A valid State driver's license is required. As a condition of employment, you will be required to submit a completed GSA Form 3607, Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. If you are tentatively selected for employment in this position, you will be required to complete GSA Form 3607 and submit the above State issued documents. Your employment, after your tentative selection, will be contingent upon receipt of these documents in a timely manner and that those documents establish, to the satisfaction of the selecting official, that you possess a valid driver's license.

    Will be required to work nights, early mornings, rotating shifts, holidays, and weekends.
