The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is the United States Department of Agriculture's chief scientific research agency and one of the world's premiere scientific organizations.  ARS Postdoctoral Research Associates are hired to supplement a lead scientist's research on agricultural problems of high national priority affecting American agriculture.

This position can be extended up to 4 years without further competition.


Major Duties:  You will be part of a team working on toxicological and analytical aspects of food biosecurity, and will add specific expertise in recombinant molecular techniques applicable to preparing and utilizing antibody fragment libraries.  Antibodies and antibody-like molecules with enhanced specificity, will be developed and expressed in microbial systems, particularly for analysis of the occurrence of Shiga toxin variants in food matrices.  Libraries of single-chain variable fragment (scFv)-displaying phage particles will be developed and optimized by recombinant techniques.  Binding molecules will be produced on a preparative scale and used for affinity-based assays and sample preparation to detect toxins in foods.
