JOB SUMMARY:

Find Solutions to Agricultural Problems that Affect Americans Every Day, From Field to Table

This position is for a Biological Science Lab Technician within the Bioproduct Chemistry and Engineering Research Unit located in Albany, CA. The incumbent of the position will participate in the planning, coordinating, and conducting of molecular biology and biochemistry experiments towards understanding conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into simple sugars.

This is a TERM position lasting for a period of 2 years with possible extension of up to 4 years.

DUTIES:

The incumbent will:

  • Design and conduct DNA subcloning projects.
  • Purify and express recombinant proteins.
  • Design and conduct complex biochemical experiments.
  • Develop or design various aspects of research projects on the basis of overall objectives.
  • Perform highly complex techniques using a variety of specialized equipment.
  • Search for literature pertinent to areas of research for new procedures or techniques.
  • Utilize computers and software packages to tabulate and summarize data.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and utilize highly specialized complex equipment used for test and evaluation procedures.
  • Maintain an inventory of chemicals for research and experiments.
  • Prepare solutions and reagents for use in the laboratory.
  • Safely dispose of biological and chemical waste materials.


QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Minimum Qualifications

GS-08:

Specialized Experience: One full-time year (12-months) of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service performing the following duties under supervision: utilizing molecular biology techniques such as PCR and DNA cloning, and associated equipment; demonstrating biochemistry techniques such as protein expression, purification, and activity assays, and associated equipment; searching for literature pertinent to microbiology, molecular biology, and biochemistry for new procedures or techniques; modifying or developing techniques and procedures to satisfy the needs of research projects; maintaining, calibrating, and modifying equipment used for test and evaluation procedures; utilizing computers and software packages to tabulate, and summarize data; preparing solutions and reagents for use in the laboratory; and safely disposing of biological and chemical waste materials.

Education: One and a half years (27 semester hours) of graduate education with major study in biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics.

Combination: A combination of the specialized experience and education as described above, such that the percentage of required experience plus the percentage of education equals 100%.

GS-09:

Specialized Experience: One full-time year (12-months) of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-08 grade level in the Federal service performing the following duties: utilizing molecular biology techniques such as PCR and DNA cloning, and associated equipment; demonstrating biochemistry techniques such as protein expression, purification, and activity assays, and associated equipment; searching for literature pertinent to microbiology, molecular biology, and biochemistry for new procedures or techniques; developing or designing various aspects of research projects on the basis of overall objectives; developing new or improved procedures and methods to satisfy the needs of research projects; maintaining, calibrating, and synchronizing highly specialized complex equipment used for test and evaluation procedures; preparing solutions and reagents for use in the laboratory; and safely disposing of biological and chemical waste materials.

Education: Two full years (36 semester hours) of graduate education or a master's degree with major study in biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics.

Combination: A combination of the specialized experience and education as described above, such that the percentage of required experience plus the percentage of education equals 100%.
