DUTIES:

 

WORK SCHEDULE: Monday - Friday Day Shift

 

VA Palo Alto Health Care system (VAPAHCS) is a large and complex VA health care system that provides veteran health care throughout a geographically large catchments area and is a major tertiary referral center with three hospital based division.  The position posted is on The Addiction Treatment and Consultation Team, which is part of the Addiction Treatment Service.

 

The Clinical Psychologist performs evaluations for individuals with substance use disorders who frequently have high levels of co-morbidity that include severe psychiatric problems (psychosis; bipolar disorders), personality disorders, and medical problems.  He/she also provides:  individual and group psychotherapy; treatment plan development; case management; crisis management;  and risk assessment for suicidality and violence; admits to inpatient facility when appropriate.

 

In addition, the incumbent will:

 

-          Serve as leader/coordinator/liaison between residential programs, inpatient services, and outpatients clinics

-          Provide intensive case management involving various systems that impact veterans (i.e. legal, medical, housing, financial, employment)

-          Perform substance abuse evaluations to assess readiness and appropriateness for the SUD residential programs

-          Need to be familiar with ASAM criteria of treatment

-          Coordinates  with the admission process to the residential addiction treatment programs

-          Works collaboratively with other mental health disciplines and services such as Social Work , Psychiatry, Inpatient Psychiatry, Mental Health Clinics, etc.

-          Be familiar with how diversity impacts the unique situations of veterans such as cultural, racial, sexual, and gender identities is important.

-          Work with issues related Traumatic Brain Injury, PTSD, opiate dependency management, and chronic pain.

-          Work with different military status such as active duty, reserve, and national guard.

-          Work with the psycho-social and psychological issues related to court ordered treatments and treatment planning of veterans with active or relevant legal history.

 


QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:  

  • U.S. citizenship.  
  • Education

Have a doctoral degree in psychology from a graduate program in psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA).   The specialty area of the degree must be consistent with the assignment for which the applicant is to be employed.

AND

Have successfully completed a professional psychology internship training program that has been accredited by APA.  

AND FOR GS-13 LEVEL: Licensure.   Hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (e.g., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia.

 

Specialized Experience:   

GS-11: Applicant must posses one (1) year of specialized experience that equips you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position at the GS-11 level.  To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-09 level related to the position. Specialized experience is professional experience that equips the applicant with the knowledge, skills and ability to diagnose mental disorders, conduct psychological and/or neuropsychological assessments, treat mental disorders through a variety of modalities, and provide adjunctive interventions for treatment of medical disorders practicing under the close supervision of a licensed psychologist.

 

GS-12:  In addition to meeting the basic education requirement above, you must posses the following; one (1) year of specialized experience that equips you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position at the GS-12 level.  To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-11 level related to the position. Specialized experience is professional experience that equips the applicant with the knowledge, skills and ability to apply, a wide range of professional psychological theories and assessment methods to a variety of patient populations, ability to develop coherent treatment strategies and the ability to incorporate new clinical procedures.

 

GS-13: In addition to meeting the basic education requirement above, you must posses any of the following; Do you possess one (1) year of specialized experience that equips you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position at the GS-13 level? To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-12 level related to the position. Specialized experience is professional experience that equips the applicant with the knowledge, skills and ability to apply a wide range of advanced professional psychological theories and assessment methods to a variety of patient populations, the ability to provide professional advice and consultation in areas related to professional psychology and behavioral health, and knowledge of clinical research literature.

 

Specialized experience is progressively responsible experience, which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and is in or related to the work of the position. Such qualifying experience may have been gained in administrative, supervisory, managerial, or professional work, which provided the applicant an opportunity to acquire knowledge of management principles, practices, methods and techniques In addition the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

1.  Knowledge of, and ability to apply, advanced professional psychological theories and techniques to the full range of patient populations.

2.  Ability to provide professional advice and consultation in areas related to professional psychology and behavioral health.

3.  Knowledge of clinical research literature.
