This position is located in the Biostatistics Research Branch (BRB), Division of Clinical Research (DCR), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). Members of BRB provide statistical advice and assistance to staff throughout NIAID by engaging in collaborative research with NIAID scientists  (Intramural and Extramural); developing new statistical methods related to any aspect of NIAID research; developing new mathematical models to describe the biology of infectious diseases or immune responses; and providing statistical advice and oversight for Intramural and Extramural research.

DUTIES:

If you are selected for this position, you will perform the following duties:
•Apply a variety of statistical techniques such as analysis of variance, probability, time series analysis, regression analysis, contingency tables, survival analysis, tests of significance, confidence intervals, and sample size requirements to laboratory and or clinical data.
•Provide advice on statistical aspects of research studies to include protocol design, definition of outcomes, sample size and power, methods of statistical analysis, interim monitoring, and the analysis of results.
•Interpret and evaluate the results from the application of these statistical techniques.
•Prepare reports as required on the progress of assigned projects to include documentation of methods of analysis, computer programs developed, and the results of the analyses.


QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Applicants must meet the basic requirements described in either paragraphs A or B below:
A. A degree that included 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics (of which at least 12 semester hours were in mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics).   Courses acceptable toward meeting the mathematics course requirement must have included at least four of the following: differential calculus, integral calculus, advanced calculus, theory of equations, vector analysis, advanced algebra, linear algebra, mathematical logic, differential equations, or any other advanced course in mathematics for which one of these was a prerequisite.  Courses in mathematical statistics or probability theory with a prerequisite of elementary calculus or more advanced courses will be accepted toward meeting the mathematics requirements, with the provision that the same course cannot be counted toward both the mathematics and the statistics requirement.
B. A combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.

To qualify for this position at the GS-12 level, you must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 obtained in either the private or public sector that included the following tasks and responsibilities:  served as a consultant and collaborator within a epidemiological or health survey research project; served as a statistical advisor to other agencies or organizations; participated in committee work, meetings and conferences of professional societies with general guidance from senior staff.

 

To qualify for this position at the GS-13 level, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 obtained in either the private or public sector that included the following tasks and responsibilities:  served as a consultant and collaborator within an epidemiological or health survey research project; served as a statistical advisor to other agencies or organizations;  independently developed statistical analyses and disseminated epidemiologic data;  developed mathematical models;  independently selected and applied the appropriate statistical analysis and data processing software as it relates to the optimal methods for an analysis; led committee work, meetings and conferences of professional societies; collaborated in epidemiological or health survey research projects; recommended solutions to senior staff for approval;  trained new hires to modify, adapt and refine guidelines for analysis.
