JOB SUMMARY:

This position is located in the Office of the Chief Scientist of Integrated Research Facility (IRF) at Ft. Detrick MD. The IRF is a component of the Division of Clinical Research (DCR) within the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Time in grade met within 30 days of closing date.
  • Position is subject to a background investigation.

DUTIES:

  • Develop the IRF strategic plan as it relates to the scientific mission, organizational structure, future collaborations and establishment of a research program that supports the NIAID's strategic priorities.
  • Direct the scientific and operational development of complex multidisciplinary research protocols under BSL-3 and BSL-4 containment conditions.
  • Develop and maintain liaison with national and international professional societies, scientists, and public interest organizations to enhance dissemination of research findings and foster their application in a clinical setting. 


QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

In order to meet the minimum qualification requirements for this position, you must possess and describe the following:

Basic Requirements:

A) Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.

OR

B) Combination of education and experience:  courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

AND

You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: planning, directing, and managing a high containment laboratory scientific research program;  reviewing and assessing relevant science and current research, developments and advances in the area of infectious disease and biodefense research; developing guidelines, policies, and procedures for a biocontainment facility and its research activities; and developing and maintaining collaborative working relationships with research organizations, regulatory agencies, and professional and scientific organizations
