If you are selected for this position, you will serve as a staff neuropsychologist with the South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS) Polytrauma Transitional Rehabilitation Program (PTRP). You will offer treatment in the form of individual therapy, group therapy, and neuropsychological assessment, and you will also provide consultation to other members of the interdisciplinary team.

Clinical responsibilities include:

  • Providing a full range of neuropsychological diagnostic services including the use of neuropsychological and psychological testing for patients within STVHCS

These evaluations employ a comprehensive diagnostic interview, review of available records, collateral contact when available, as well as objective and neuropsychological tests when indicated
  • Providing a range of psychological therapeutic interventions with individuals with mental health and medical disorders utilizing empirically supported modalities when indicated
  • Consulting with and serving as a resource for other professional personnel concerning the need for, evaluation of, and development of psychological services in STVHCS.

VA Polytrauma Transitional Rehabilitation Programs (PTRP) are time limited, goal oriented, residential rehabilitation programs that partner with Veteran and Servicemember participants to improve their physical, cognitive, communicative, behavioral, psychological, and social functioning after significant injury or illness.

Currently, there are four PTRPs operating nationally at the VA medical centers in Minneapolis, Palo Alto, Richmond, and Tampa. The San Antonio PTRP, located at 4949 Gus-Eckert Road, will be opening soon.

The overarching goal of the PTRPs is to help participants return to the most appropriate, least restrictive community setting, by targeting skills necessary for return to home, school, work, or military service, as feasible.

The PTRPs offer interactive therapy programs designed to address the individual needs and goals of each participant, challenge participants through a wide range of individual and group therapeutic activities and living skills practices, focus heavily on community reintegration activities, and employ teams of licensed and credentialed rehabilitation professionals who provide patient-centered, integrated care.
