The NAHERC assists in the federal response to domestic and international animal disease outbreaks, threats, or natural disasters.   • This is an open continuous announcement and will be used to fill vacancies throughout the world when an animal health emergency is declared. The duty locations are dependent upon the specific emergency and cannot be determined until an emergency has been declared.

When activated, qualified NAHERC applicants become temporary employees of USDA-APHIS-Veterinary Services (VS). The length of appointments vary depending upon the emergency and the availability of the applicant. Over the years, veterinary professionals enrolled in the NAHERC have assisted the United Kingdom with its foot-and-mouth disease outbreak, Virginia with its low-pathogenic avian influenza control program, and the USDA-VS with the exotic newcastle disease eradication program. More than 200 NAHERC members have responded to requests for assistance. The purpose of this announcement is to recruit and enroll veterinary personnel interested in serving in the event of an outbreak or other animal disease event.

What To Expect Next

In the event of an emergency, qualified applicants will be referred for employment consideration. Emergencies are unpredictable. You may receive availability inquiries very soon, or it may be a year or longer before you are contacted. Consequently, it is very important that you update your online profile, as necessary. Appointments are temporary not to exceed one year or less and may be terminated at any time. The length of appointments will vary depending upon need and applicant availability. The NAHERC temporary appointments do not receive the benefits associated with permanent competitive service employment. For example, you will not be eligible to receive health or life insurance. However, if you are activated you will be entitled to vacation and sick leave accrual.

Applications will be reviewed to confirm you possess the education and/or experience requirements described in the qualifications section.   • The only documents you are required to submit for the NAHERC announcement are documents verifying you meet the education requirements.
  • If you are unable to fax your education documentation, you may send it to the contact address listed in the Agency Contact section of this vacancy announcement. Mailed education documentation must include your name and the NAHERC-2012-0003 announcement number.
  • Fax only documents which are clear and legible. Illegible faxed documents cannot be used for qualification or verification purposes.
  • If you are placed on the NAHERC roster and you were qualified on the basis of an unofficial list of college courses or copies of diplomas or licenses, you MUST submit copies of official college transcripts BEFORE you may be activated during an emergency.
