DUTIES:

The incumbent will specifically address the complex needs of veterans with Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and co-morbid Substance Abuse Disorders. In addition to direct clinical services for substance abuse, the incumbent will also provide prevention services to PTSD clients to diminish the risk that they will develop substance abuse problems. It is expected that the incumbent will successfully coordinate service delivery within the PTSD Team, and

with the Military Sexual Trauma (MST) Coordinator, the returning Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF) Combat Veterans Clinical Coordinator, Substance Abuse Services, and other Behavioral Health Care Line services. The psychologist applies advanced strategies to a full range of patient problems in his/her work setting. He/she has advanced knowledge of culturally sensitive psychological assessment techniques, diagnosis,

intervention, and behavioral health that qualifies him/her to provide advice and consultation to professionals representing a variety of disciplines. The incumbent is also required to exercise judgment in the selection or adaptation of standard and accepted psychological theories, techniques, and practices in treating patients or developing new techniques and programs for the treatment of clinical populations. The primary job functions of psychologists at this level include the provision of direct psychological patient care in both individual and group

modalities, consultation on difficult or complex cases, education of staff and trainee supervision. Preferred evidence-based practices would include Seeking Safety, Prolonged Exposure, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Coping Skills Training/Cue Exposure, Motivational Interviewing and Integrative Dual Diagnosis Treatment.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • U.S. citizenship
  • English language proficiency (written and spoken)
  • Physical standards - All applicants must meet the physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to employment may be required.
  • Doctoral degree in psychology from a graduate program in psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA)
  • Successfully completed a professional psychology internship training program accredited by the APA

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

EXPERIENCE:

  • GS-12 grade requires one year post doctoral experience obtained in a professional program concerned with health, rehabilitation or vocational restoration.
  • GS-13 grade requires two years post doctoral experience with licensure.
