The full performance level for these positions is GS-13.  Applicants will be considered at the GS-11, GS-12, and GS-13 grade levels.

 

The position is ideal for those who enjoy working on integrative, multidisciplinary teams, utilizing evidence based therapies within a recovery oriented approach.  The position will encompass a significant amount of integrative treatment, and the position requires a person who is well versed in a variety of evidence-based therapies or one who is seeking further experience with these approaches.  Funding is available for learning new therapies and attending conferences.  This opening provides the incumbent psychologist with discretion in building their own caseloads and clinics, participating in psychology Master’s, pre-doctoral, and post-doctoral training programs, research, and refinement of individual clinical expertise.  Psychologists are full members of the medical staff.

The optimal candidate will have a broad variety of assessment and therapy skills, including training in Evidenced Based Therapies.  The incumbent will provide evidence-based health and geriatric psychology in the homes of Veterans with complex disabling diseases by performing capacity/competency assessments, screen for cognitive deficits, assess Veterans for advance directives, provide individual/group psychotherapy, and provide psycho-educational and supportive interventions.  In addition, the HBPC psychologist provides effective interventions with spouses and family members oftentimes serving as caregivers to home-based Veterans.  Lastly, the HBPC psychologist will facilitate transition and adjustment of Veterans into new living environments (e.g., nursing home, assisted living facility).  Eligible recent post-docs and other new graduates are encouraged to apply.

DUTIES:

As a Clinical Psychologist the incumbent deals with extremely complex diagnostic, therapeutic, and administrative questions involving patient care.   The incumbent must recognize deficits and problems which may be encountered in a diverse patient population with varying and complex medical and/or psychological problems in achieving satisfactory psychological adjustment.   The ultimate psychological rehabilitation of patients depends upon the functions of this position.   The incumbent ensures that all Healthcare system patients referred for psychological evaluation and/or treatment are provided appropriate services in a comprehensive, unified manner, and on a timely basis. 

 

A recruitment/relocation incentive is negotiable up to $25,000 for a highly qualified applicant.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:  

   a.  U.S. citizenship  

   b.  Education

       (1)  Have a doctoral degree in psychology from a graduate program in psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA).  The specialty area of the degree must be consistent with the assignment for which the applicant is to be employed. A degree in the Health Psychology/Behavioral Medicine is preferred.

    AND

       (2)  Have successfully completed a professional psychology internship training program that has been accredited by APA.  Exceptions: (1) new VHA psychology internship programs that are in the process of applying for APA accreditation are acceptable in fulfillment of the internship requirement, provided that such programs were sanctioned by the VHA Central Office Program Director for Psychology and the VHA Central Office of Academic Affiliations at the time that the individual was an intern and (2) VHA facilities who offered full one-year pre-doctoral internships prior to PL 96-151 (pre-1979) are considered to be acceptable in fulfillment of the internship requirement. 

 

GS-11:  Experience.  None beyond the basic requirements.

 

GS-12:  Experience.  In addition to the basic requirements at the GS-11 level, at least 1 year of experience as a professional psychologist equivalent to the next lower grade level. 

 

GS-13:  (a)  Licensure.  Hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (e.g., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia.

 

            (b)  Experience.  In addition to the experience requirements at the GS-12 level, at least 1 additional year of experience as a psychologist equivalent to the next lower grade level.
