The Indian Health Service (IHS), an agency within the Department of Health and Human Services, is responsible for providing federal health services to American Indians and Alaska Natives.  The IHS provides a comprehensive health services delivery system for American Indians and Alaska Natives with opportunity for maximum tribal involvement in developing and managing programs to meet their health needs.
To be eligible for this position under the Delegated Examining (DE) hiring plan, you must be a U.S. Citizen.

Relocation Expenses Paid:   Expenses will be paid in the interest of the government and not in the interest of the selected employee.  Relocation expenses are authorized and will be paid.  You will be required to sign a one year service agreement.  Failure to fulfill the one year service agreement may result in repayment of relocation expenses.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

DUTIES:

Duties:

  • Function as a team leader of the child and family services and provide direct mental health services as clinical  psychologist; provides psychotherapeutic and other psychological services as needed which may include, but not limited to family therapy, behavioral therapy, individual therapy, play therapy, group therapy, marriage therapy and testing

  • Assists in the administrative operation of child and family services; assist in planning, development and clinical supervision of child mental health specialists, social workers, non-professional counseling service staff and volunteers involved in the treatment of children and adolescents

  • Assesses the nature of mental health problems specific to Native American families; evaluates methods used in the treatment of problems, provide psychological testing; prepares reports on mental health referrals necessary for treatment purposes; maintains records on clinical activities; prepares reports for statistical and planning purposes

  • Serves as  consultant to other physicians, nurses, staff, community agencies and service providers regarding treatment planning, clinical assessment and case disposition
  • Provide technical assistance with schedule planning, resource management, quality assurance, recruiting and personnel issues
  • Coordinates child and family related quality assurance activities for Counseling Services Department

  •  Participates in monthly case staffing within the Service Unit and community agencies of schools, Department of Social Services, and Family Court Systems to identify children and/or family mental health issues

  • Performs other related duties as necessary as a member of the Counseling Service Team


QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Licensure Requirements:  Each PHS Clinical Psychologist must possess and maintain a valid, current, unrestricted license or certification in a state.

Your education and work experience may be combined to meet the qualification requirements of this position.

 

Satisfactory completion of all the requirements for the doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) directly related to full professional work in clinical psychology is required.

In addition to meeting the basic entry qualification requirements, applicants must have specialized experience and/or directly related education. 

GS-13:  Candidates must have completed 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-12 to qualify for the GS-13 grade level. 

GS-14:  Candidates must have completed 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-13 to qualify for the GS-14 grade level.

 

Specialized Experience:  Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.  Examples of the type of specialized experience that is creditable is serving as a clinical child psychologist and providing psychotherapeutic and other psychological services as needed which may include, but not limited to family therapy, behavioral therapy, individual therapy, group therapy, marriage therapy and testing.
