Incumbent is a Research Soil Scientist/Research Rangeland Management Specialist assigned to the Great Basin Rangelands Research Unit in Reno, Nevada. The Great Basin Rangelands Research Unit’s (GBRR) mission is the development of management guidelines, technologies, and practices for conserving and restoring Great Basin rangelands and development of tools and techniques to assess the effectiveness of these management actions. This position support ARS National Programs 215 Pasture, Forages, and Rangeland Systems and 304 Crop Protection and Quarantine.

DUTIES:

Major Duties:

Incumbent performs the following:

  • Develops fundamental relationships between the spatial and temporal interactions of biotic and abiotic components and ecosystem responses required to achieve successful restoration/re-vegetation of degraded semi-arid rangelands;
  • Develops predictive functions to describe interaction between restoration/re-vegetation techniques and invasive plants on ecosystems (e.g. runoff, soil erosion/sediment, biodiversity, and forage production) in semi-arid rangeland watersheds;
  • Conducts independent and team research related to developing decision tools for natural resources management and environmental assessments at the landscape and watershed scales;
  • Combines findings into decision support systems to evaluate the feasibility and benefits of alternative conservation systems to enhance sustainability of western rangeland landscapes and watersheds;
  • Develops a collaborative research program with other ARS locations across the Great Basin to facilitate development of sustainable rangeland management practices; and
  • Designs, conducts and publishes in peer-reviewed, scientific journals.
     


QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Basic Requirements:
GS-0454: A) Degree: range management; or a related discipline that included at least 42 semester hours in a combination of the plant, animal, and soil sciences, and natural resources management, as follows:

·        Range Management- At least 18 semester hours of course work in range management, including courses in such areas as basic principles of range management, range plants, range ecology, range inventories and studies, range improvements, and ranch or rangeland planning.

·        Directly Related Plant, Animal, and Soil Science- At least 15 semester hours of directly related courses in the plant, animal, and soil sciences, including at least one course in each of these three scientific areas, i.e., plant, animal, and soil sciences. Courses in such areas as plant taxonomy, plant physiology, plant ecology, animal nutrition, livestock production, and soil morphology or soil classification are acceptable.

·        Related Resources Management Studies- At least 9 semester hours of course work in related resource management subjects, including courses in such areas as wildlife management, watershed management, natural resource or agricultural economics, forestry, agronomy, forages, and outdoor recreation management.

B) Combination of education and experience – at least 24 semester hours of course work in the combination of plant, animal, and soil sciences and natural resources management shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.  

 

GS-0470: A) Degree: soil science or a closely related discipline that included 30 semester hours or equivalent in biological, physical, or earth science, with a minimum of 15 semester hours in such subjects as soil genesis, pedology, soil chemistry, soil physics, and soil fertility OR B) Combination of education and experience – courses equivalent to a major in soil science or a related discipline that included at least 30 semester hours in the biological, physical, or earth sciences. At least 15 of these semester hours must have been in the areas specified in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. 

 

In addition to above, applicants must also possess the following:

 

GS-12: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service OR Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree.

 

GS-13: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service.

 

GS-14: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service.

 

Specialized Experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled.  The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

1. Knowledge of the principles, theories, and practices of soil science, rangeland management, and/or ecology in order to develop, test and validate techniques to quantify effects of management decisions on rangeland ecosystem services and sustainability.  

2. Skill in using geographic information systems {e.g. geographic information systems (GIS)} in order to assess impact of invasive weeds and benefits of restoration and/or land management practices at the landscape or watershed scale.

3. Ability to develop, test, and validate techniques, and report results in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

esearch scientists have open-ended promotion potential.  Research accomplishments and their impact on the duties and responsibilities of positions are evaluated periodically.  The grade level is limited only by the individual's demonstrated ability to perform research of recognized importance to science and technology.  *Final grade level may be determined by a peer review panel.
