JOB SUMMARY:

The Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management is looking for temporary employees to work as Supervisory Wildland Firefighters (Range/Forestry Technicians) on a variety of wildland firefighting crews in Nevada.

These positions have been identified as one of the key fire management positions under the Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) Standard. This position has been categorized as a Supervisory Fire Engine Operator(SEOP), and is subject to meeting the minimum qualification standards for IFPM prior to being placed into the position. Selection will be by district office and can include any of the locations indicated below:

 - Battle Mountain District (Battle Mountain, Austin, Eureka, NV)
 - Elko District (Elko, Wells, Carlin, NV)
 - Ely District (Ely, Pony Springs, Caliente, NV)
 - Winnemucca District (Winnemucca, Lovelock, Paradise Valley, McDermitt, NV)

DUTIES:

A Supervisory Wildland Firefighter (GS-07 Supervisory Range/Forestry Technician) The primary purpose of this position is to perform wildland fire fighting work and to supervise wildland fire crews. May serve as a supervisor for hand, prescribed fire, or fire engine crews. Work may include directing and performing prescribed fire operations, directing and participating in fireline construction, backfiring and burnout operations, directing the operation of a wildland fire engine, and performingand directing others in starting pump engine, priming pump, adjusting engine speed and pump valves, and laying hose. May be required to operate light vehicles and 4X4s.


QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

To qualify for a GS-07, you must meet at least one of the following AND the Selective Factor:
- 12 months of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-6 level duties. Examples includes on-the-line wildland fire experience in forest/range fire control, prevention or suppression work as a lead wildland firefighter, utilizing a variety of specialized wildland fire tools and equipment. OR
- 18 semester/24 quarter hours credit of graduate education related to range technician work such as a major study in forestry, range management, agriculture or a subject-matter field directly related to this position; OR
- a combination of education and experience that is directly related to the work of this position as stated above.  

SELECTIVE FACTOR for GS-07:
In addition to the basic qualifications listed above, uou must possess the following National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) incident management qualifications and training to be considered eligible this position.  

1.    Single Resource-Engine (ENGB); And
2.    Incident Commander Type 5 (ICT5); And
3.    Successful completion of the S-211 Course

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/TESTING: You must pass an initial pre-employment physical examination and must be able to pass the work capacity fitness test (Must carry a 45 lb pack for 3 miles within 45 minutes). Failure to meet any of the required medical qualifications will disqualify you for employment. Any condition, which would cause you to be a hazard to yourself or to others, will disqualify you for employment.

DRUG TESTING: BLM POSITIONS ARE SUBJECT TO RANDOM DRUG TESTING. If selected for a random drug test, it must be completed prior to beginning work. The drug test will be provided at Government direction and expense. Once hired, employees are also subject to random drug testing during employment.

Temporary employees hired in wildland fire or wildland fire support positions are eligible for the following:

  • Participation in the Federal Employees Health Benefit (FEHB) program - Employees electing to participate in the FEHB will be responsible for the employee share of the premium while on the official agency roles.  After separating from federal employment, employees will be offered to continue participation in FEHB under the Temporary Continuation of Coverage (TCC) option. Employees electing to continue coverage under the TCC provision will be responsible for the full premium amount plus a 2% administration fee.
