DUTIES:

The staff position is in the Behavioral Sciences Division, National Center for PTSD, at the Jamaica Plain campus of the VA Boston Healthcare System.   He/she will conduct scientific investigations and contribute to both generation and dissemination of knowledge in support of the research and educational missions of the National Center for PTSD.   The overall objective is to advance prevention, understanding, and treatment of PTSD and other consequences of traumatic stress. The incumbent will investigate issues related to the VA C&P process for PTSD focusing on psychometric evaluations including: a measure of functional impairment in a PTSD sample and the evaluation of the reliability and validity of the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5, the new CAPS.   Additionally, the incumbent will aid in the development of a longitudinal registry of combat-exposed men and women who served in Operation Enduring Freedom and/or Operation Iraqi. The Incumbent's research will focus on the evaluation of psychometric measures specific to Veterans with PTSD and related conditions, potentially involving relevant collaboration with other staff members within the National Center for PTSD, at the Boston VA as well as with investigators at other VA and non-VA institutions. He/she will deliver direct clinical care to veterans with PTSD by providing assessment and therapeutic intervention, and will consult with other staff members to assist with treatment planning and care coordination for adult veterans who receive PTSD services. The incumbent will provide training at all levels (e.g., psychology practicum students, pre-doctoral interns, post-doctoral fellows, and psychiatry residents).   He/she will comply with national and local performance measures, including timely screening and documentation requirements, and will also participate in various service, committee, and departmental meetings.   

WORK SCHEDULE:   Full time  -  Monday through Friday  8:00am to 4:30pm

NOTE: Selectee may be required to work at any Boston Healthcare System campus, as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

(From VA Qualification Standards) 

BASIC REQUIREMENTS :   The basic requirements for employment as a VHA psychologist are prescribed by:   Public Law 96-151 codified in Title 38, U.S.C. § 7402.   To qualify for appointment, all applicants for the position of psychologist in VHA must meet the following: 

A. Citizenship: Citizen of the United States. 

B. Education:   Have a doctoral degree in psychology from a graduate program in psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA).   The specialty area of the degree must be consistent with the assignment for which the applicant is to be employed.  

AND 

Have successfully completed a professional psychology internship training program that has been accredited by APA. Exceptions : (1) new VHA psychology internship programs that are in the process of applying for APA accreditation are acceptable in fulfillment of the internship requirement, provided that such programs were sanctioned by the VHA Central Office Program Director for Psychology and the VHA Central Office of Academic Affiliations at the time that the individual was an intern and (2) VHA facilities who offered full one-year pre-doctoral internships prior to PL 96-151 (pre-1979) are considered to be acceptable in fulfillment of the internship requirement.

Licensure:   Hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (e.g., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia. 

Exception.   The Secretary may waive the requirement of licensure for an individual psychologist for a period not to exceed 2 years from the date of employment on the condition that such a psychologist provide care only under the supervision of a psychologist who is so licensed.   Non-licensed psychologists who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements may be given a temporary appointment as a graduate psychologist under the authority of 38 U.S.C. § 7405 (a) (1) (D).   Failure to obtain licensure during that period is justification for termination of the temporary appointment.   This may result in termination of employment. 

Additional experience :

In addition to meeting the basic requirements, applicants must possess at least 1 one year of experience as a psychologist equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11).   

Experience In addition to the experience requirements at the GS-12 level, at least 1 additional year of experience as a psychologist equivalent to the next lower grade level.     

In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: 

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities : 

1.  Knowledge of, and ability to apply, advanced professional psychological theories and techniques to the full range of patient populations.

2.   Ability to develop coherent treatment strategies.

3.   Ability to incorporate new clinical procedures.

4.   Ability to design and implement research grant projects.  

Work Conditions:  The work environment involves everyday risks and/or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of each place in various hospital offices.

Physical Requirements:  Mostly sedentary, requiring standing, ambulation and bending.
