This position is located in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Office of Surveillance, Epidemiology & Laboratory Services (OSELS), National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), Office of Information Systems (OIS), Information Design & Publishing Staff (IDPS) in Hyattsville, MD.

DUTIES:

The incumbent will serve as a Technical Writer-Editor responsible for organizing and directing the activities of writer-editors, ensuring that editing complies with legal and regulatory requirements and meets customer needs.  Develops goals and objectives that integrate organizational and public health communication objectives.  Researches, interprets, analyzes and applies document clearance procedures prescribed by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).   Establishes policies and procedures for the accomplishment of center editing services.  Exercises supervisory personnel management responsibilities.  Advises and provides counsel to employees regarding policies, procedures, and directives of management.  Represents the editorial team with a variety of CDC and/or Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) functional area organizations.  Establishes, develops, and maintains effective working relationships with National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), CDC, and other professionals.  Provides and ensures that subordinates provide customer guidance and training.  Participates in special projects and initiatives and performs special assignments.  Determines appropriate recommendations for unresolved or questionable problems and performs follow-up.  Attends planning meetings, including determining the editorial schedule, for all publications produced with the branch and updates the weekly production reports.  Serves as an editorial advisor to the Branch Chief on matters involving editorial policy, including adherence to various style guides.  Incumbent has a major role in developing, implement evaluating, and maintaining center-wide editorial practices, guidelines, and standards to achieve more effective communication in publications.


QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

 

Applicants must have one year of specialized experience at the GS-12 level of difficulty and responsibility in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph.

 

Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include editing and implementing guidelines and standards applied in the preparation of scientific or medical publications and other communications; preparing files for printing and electronic dissemination; editing material to develop, interpret and explain complex scientific or medical findings; translating or converting ideas into elements to ensure understanding and experience planning, managing, organizing and supervising a staff of writers-editors.
