JOB SUMMARY:

Find Solutions to Agricultural Problems that Affect Americans Every Day, From Field to Table

The incumbent supports a Research Microbiologist's on-going program dedicated to investigating the interactions of human pathogenic bacteria with produce, and ecology of human pathogens in produce-growing environments; specific experiments focus on interactions of human pathogenic bacteria with pre-harvest produce, assessment of detection methods for pathogens from produce, and isolation and characterization of strains of pathogens from environmental samples environments that support growth or survival of human pathogenic bacteria.

DUTIES:

Major Duties:   The work the incumbent does involves characterization of isolates using pulsed field gel electrophoresis or PFGE.  Experiments may also include growth of plants.  Standard microbiological and molecular genetics techniques will be used to inoculate and re-isolate bacteria from plants as well as In vitro studies of bacteria.  Sub-typing of strains isolated from the environment requires the handling of large numbers of isolates of E. coli, Salmonella and L. monocytogens.  Incumbent is expected to participate as a team member with the scientist in most phases of the research, including the development or adaptation of new techniques, maintenance of laboratory equipment and supplies, and preparation of solutions and media.  Incumbent is expected to keep exact and detailed records of experimental data, compile and analyze data using a personal computer and software packages.

 

 


QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Basic Requirements:  Applicants must meet the following criteria in order to be eligible: 

GS-07:  1 year of Specialized Experience equivalent to at least the GS-6 level in the Federal service OR  Education - successful completion of 1 full year of graduate education directly related to the duties of the position.

GS-08:  1 year of Specialized Experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 level in the Federal service OR Education - successful completion of 1  1/2 full years of graduate education directly related to the duties of the position. 

Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled.  The specialized experience requirements for this position are:


1.  Knowledge of the basic principles and practices of microbiology as it relates to pathogenic bacteria.


2.  Knowledge of basic molecular genetics techniques such as PCR or DNA cloning or DNA extraction.


3.  Skill in the use of a personal computer and software packages such as Microsoft Word, Excel for data collection and analysis.
