POSITION TITLE: Psychologist GS-0180-13/13
VA Northern Indiana Health Care System (VANIHCS) was formed in 1995 by the integration of the VA Medical Centers in Fort Wayne and Marion, Indiana.  The mission of VANIHCS is to provide coordinated, compassionate and comprehensive quality primary care, mental health services, and extended care to Veterans in a timely, accessible and cost effective manner.  The Fort Wayne campus offers primary and secondary medical and surgical services, and the Marion campus offers a full range of psychiatry services, nursing home care and extended care services. Primary care clinics are available at both campuses and at Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) located in South Bend, Goshen, Peru and Muncie, Indiana.
Salary for external applicants will be set by the Psychologist Professional Standards Board.
Current permanent employees of the VA Northern Indiana Health Care System, (VANIHCS) will receive first consideration when filling vacancies.

The psychologist has responsibility for providing a full range of clinical/counseling psychological services to patients of the Medical Center in the area(s) assigned to him or her by the Chief of Mental Health Services. Specific duties may include the following functions:
• Psychological assessment and consultation.
• Psychological treatment including individual and group psychotherapy.
• Research.
• Collaboration between the following entities in and out of the VA to include but not limited to Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF), Substance Use Disorder (SUD), Mental Health Clinic, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), psychosocial Rehabilitation, Psychiatric Compensation and Pension, other VA Northern Indiana Health Care System (VANIHCS) and Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) and their programs.
• Education and training.
• Recovery based principles and practices will be learned and used whenever possible.
• Appropriate evidenced based treatment will be learned and used as appropriate.


The basic requirements for employment as a VHA Psychologist are prescribed by: Public Law 96-151 codified in Title 38, U.S.C. § 7402.  To qualify for appointment, all applicants for the position of psychologist, GS-13 in VHA must meet the following:
• Must be a US citizen.
• Have a doctoral degree in psychology from a graduate program in psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA).  The specialty area of the degree must be consistent with the assignment for which the applicant is to be employed.
• Successful completion of a professional psychology internship training program that has been accredited by APA.
• Hold a full, current and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (e.g., Puerto Rice), or the District of Columbia.
• Meet the physical requirements of a Psychologist as defined in VA Handbook 5019 and VA Handbook 5005, Part III, Chapter 2, paragraph 7.
• Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
In addition to the basic employment requirements, the Grade 13 Psychologist must demonstrate the following professional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) in their application package, either in the resume or in narrative form.  Please be clear and specific as we cannot make assumptions about your education and/or experience.
• Knowledge of, and ability to apply, advanced professional psychological theories and techniques to the full range of patient populations. 
• Ability to provide professional advice and consultation in areas related to professional psychology and behavioral health.
• Knowledge of clinical research literature.
In addition to meeting the Basic Educational Requirements and License requirements, applicants must possess at least one year specialized experience at the next lower grade, GS-12 or its equivalent. Qualifying specialized experience is described as experience making psychological assessments, and presenting diagnostic and treatment recommendations regarding children and adolescents to the professional team which includes physicians, social workers, and nursing staff.
Time in Grade Restriction: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must meet the Time in Grade Restriction.
