About the Memphis VA Medical Center:  The VAMC in Memphis, TN consists of one main campus located at 1030 Jefferson Avenue, which includes a 60-bed Spinal Cord Injury Unit, and ten community based outpatient clinics (CBOC).  It is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level I Facility and one of the most complex medical centers in the VA system.  It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology, as well as extensive education and research programs.  Comprehensive primary, secondary, and tertiary health care is provided in areas of medicine, general cardiovascular and neurological surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, spinal cord injury, neurology, oncology, dentistry, and geriatrics.  Specialized outpatient services are provided through general, specialty, and subspecialty outpatient clinics including a women's health center.  Services are available to more than 206,000 Veterans living in a 53-county tri-state area (Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi).

 

Tour of Duty:  7:00 am - 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday (Day Shift)

DUTIES:

The Pharmacist (Clinical Specialist) for Critical Care/Pharmacokinetics/Antibiotic Surveillance is a licensed Pharmacist and is responsible for Critical Care/Pharmacokinetics/Antibiotic Surveillance clinic consultation activities.  The incumbent will work with the Interdisciplinary Critical Care/Pharmacokinetics/Antibiotic Surveillance Team to assist in medication reconciliation, educate patients regarding medication(s) and Opioid service agreements, review pharmacologic modalities used and make patient specific recommendations to improve patient pain and functional status and reduce adverse effects.  The incumbent will assist in identifying aberrant behaviors related to pharmacologic therapy,  provide education for staff regarding Critical Care/Pharmacokinetics/Antibiotic Surveillance, and assist in therapeutic monitoring of treatment if applicable.  Clinical Privileges or Scope of Practice documents in Critical Care/Pharmacokinetics/Antibiotic Surveillance will be acquired for practice as a provider, as directed by the Chief of Pharmacy Service, and as approved.


QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:  

  • U.S. citizenship.  
  • Graduate of a degree program in pharmacy from an approved college or university.  PHARM.D PREFERRED
  • Full, current and unrestricted license to practice pharmacy in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (i.e. Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia.

 

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:

 

Grade and salary determination will be based on the individual's qualifications and will be recommended by a Professional Standards Board.

 

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR GS-13 LEVEL:   Requires the completion of the equivalent of 1 year of creditable experience at the next lower grade which is directly related to the position to be filled OR board certification recognized by the American Pharmaceutical Association's Board of Pharmaceutical Specialities.  In addition, pharmacists in these assignments must demonstrate the following knowledges, skills, abilities and other characteristics:

 

1.  In depth knowledge of a specialized area of clinical pharmacy practice or a specialty area of pharmacy such as quality assurance/utilization review, ADP systems, drug information, etc.

 

2.  Advanced knowledge of pharmaceutics, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and pharmachotherapeutics.

 

3.  Skill in monitoring and assessing the outcome of drug therapies including physical assessment and interpretation of laboratory and other diagnostic parameters.

 

4.  Knowledge of the design, conduct, and interpretation of controlled clinical drug trials or other research related to health care.

 

5.  Ability to communicate orally and in writing with a wide variety of individuals.  This would typically include beneficiaries, professionals in other health care disciplines, and health related groups in the community.

 

6.  Knowledge of the standards related to distribution and control of scheduled and non-scheduled drugs (including research and investigational drugs).
