DUTIES:

Provides psychological assessment and diagnostic services for Veterans with a broad range of psychopathology receiving care within the Transplant Unit, Transitional Care Unit, and Palliative Care Program, including services for patients with complex psychopathology requiring advanced psycho-diagnostic skills. Demonstrates expertise in using and contemporary interview and psychometric assessment methods for mental disorders and/or behavioral health conditions. Provides education to patients and family members regarding mental disorders and best practices approaches to treatment. Provides evidence-based psychotherapeutic interventions, which may include individual, family, and group psychotherapy and psychoeducation. Provides consultation to health care providers about assessment findings and treatment plan for patients to ensure that care is coordinated, collaborative, and integrated within the Medical Center. Develops, implements, and documents the mental health treatment plan for an assigned caseload of patients. Adheres to all Facility and Service Line policies and practices for delivering clinical care, including but not limited to risk assessment and reduction practices for potentially dangerous behavior (suicide and violence), timeliness of care and access standards, professional conduct requirements, and CPRS documentation conventions.

 

At the GS-13 level, Psychologists are fully licensed and function independently as a member of the VAPSHCS Medical Staff with full clinical privileges. Psychologists at this grade additionally assume independent professional responsibility for their clinical assessment findings, patient care decisions, and documentation.

 

Administrative Responsibilities:

Assists the Team Leader and/or Program Director in the design, development, and implementation of clinical assessment and/or intervention programs; assists in the execution of ongoing program evaluation and data-driven quality improvement projects to monitor the effectiveness of the clinical program. Facilitates liaisons with other health care programs in order to effectively coordinate services. Attends and participates in administrative, Training and informational meetings; participates in the Psychology Service biannual competency review process (OPPE and FPPE), periodically serving on the Psychology Service Clinical Pertinence Review Committee.   Maintains current knowledge of, and practices in accordance with, Joint Commission requirements.


QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • U.S. citizenship
  • English language proficiency (written and spoken)
  • Physical standards: All applicants must meet the physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to employment may be required.
  • Education: Have a doctoral degree in psychology from a graduate program in psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA). The specialty area of the degree must be consistent with the assignment for which the applicant is to be employed. AND Have successfully completed a professional psychology internship training program that has been accredited by APA. Exceptions: (1) new VHA psychology internship programs that are in the process of applying for APA accreditation are acceptable in fulfillment of the internship requirement, provided that such programs were sanctioned by the VHA Central Office Program Director for Psychology and the VHA Central Office of Academic Affiliations at the time that the individual was an intern and (2) VHA facilities who offered full one-year pre-doctoral internships prior to PL 96-151 (pre-1979) are considered to be acceptable in fulfillment of the internship requirement.
  • Licensure: Hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (e.g., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia. Exception: The Secretary may waive the requirement of licensure for an individual psychologist for a period not to exceed 2 years from the date of employment on the condition that such a psychologist provide care only under the supervision of a psychologist who is so licensed. Non-licensed psychologists who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements may be given a temporary appointment as a graduate psychologist under the authority of 38 U.S.C. § 7405 (a) (1) (D). NOTE: Failure to obtain licensure during that period is justification for termination of the temporary appointment. This may result in termination of employment.

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
