Serves as a full assistant to the supervisor of a Fire Engine Module in areas with the added complexities of wildland-urban interface, including proximity of high-value improvements, and regular and reoccurring all-hazard incidents and frequent interagency jurisdictional issues and coordination requirements. The incumbent has primary responsibility for driving and operation of the engine in responding to wildland fires and other all hazard activities or other fuels related or ecosystem restoration projects

These are permanent positions with varying tours of duty and may include weekend work. Some positions may have irregular and protracted hours of work. Tours of duty include full-time or less than full-time (guaranteed minimum 13 pay period's full-time employment).

 PERMANENT OPEN CONTINUOUS RECRUITMENT: This is a continuously open vacancy announcement for one or more locations throughout the Forest Service. The number and location of positions to be filled will be dependent upon individual unit needs.  Positions may be filled as career ladders or could be filled at the full performance level dependent upon the individual unit's needs. Availability of government housing, federal day care facilities, and bargaining unit status will vary by location.  To ensure that you receive consideration, applications submitted through the on-line application process must be received by 11:59 p.m. eastern time the day before a certificate of candidates is issued. These positions have been identified under the interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) and are subject to selective placement factor requirements contained in the Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) Standard and Guide when filling these vacancies.  IFPM selective placement factors are made up of a primary and secondary National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWC) core Incident Management Qualifications and Required Training.  The applicant must possess these qualifications to be considered eligible for these positions. Drives the engine to fire or incident location and positions in appropriate location in consideration of safety of crew and equipment. Makes initial evaluation of fire situations, determines suppression method to use, including hose lays, deployment of crew, point of initial attack, type of tools to use, and application of water. Carries out suppression action. Keeps dispatcher or SFEO informed and requests additional assistance as necessary. Maintains records and prepares reports on crew hours and movement and history of action taken on fires. Determines probable causes of fire and preserves evidence of human-caused fires.

Performs wildfire suppression support as directed within training and physical capabilities and other duties as assigned. Duties listed are at the full performance level.

Basic Qualifications: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Qualifying specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

For the position, in addition to meeting the basic entry qualification requirements, applicants must have had one (1) year of specialized experience at least equivalent to GS-6 level: Made initial size up of fire situations to determine suppression method to use, including hose lays, deployment of crew, point of initial attack, type of tools to use and application of water, responsible for fire engine module in responding to wildland firefighting and all hazard incidents, maintains records and reports on crew hours and movement and history of action taken on fires, assists in preparation of prescribed burn plans or in operations including ignition and monitoring.

Substitution of Education for Experience:

The experience requirements for the GS-7 level may be met by completion of one (1) year of graduate level education in a position-related field of forestry or natural resources management.

Combination of Education and Experience:

GS-07 equivalent combinations of successfully completed education and experience may be used to meet the experience requirements.

Selective Placement Factors:

  • A minimum 90 days experience performing wildland fire suppression duties as a member of an organized fire suppression crew or comparable unit that utilized knowledge of wildland fire suppression, containment or control techniques and practices under various conditions. This experience must be documented with specific dates in the online application or resume.
  • Primary firefighter positions include the following age requirements: Under age 37 -OR- less than age 37 after subtracting the months of Federal Service worked in a primary or secondary firefighter/law enforcement position -OR- a veteran preference eligible, older than age 37 and is requesting a waiver to the maximum age requirement.
  • Successfully completed the Primary NWCG Core Requirement of Engine Boss (ENGB).
  • Successfully completed the Secondary NWCG Core Requirement of Incident Commander Type 5 (ICT5).
  • Successfully completed the NWCG Course # S-211 Portable Pumps and Water Use.

WORK CAPACITY TEST (WCT) for Wildland Firefighters: This position participates in wildland firefighting activities. Based on the type of work performed, TAKING and PASSING the WCT at the ARDUOUS level is a "condition of employment." The Arduous fitness (Pack) test requires completing a three (3) mile hike within forty-five (45) minutes, while carrying a forty-five (45) pound pack. You are strongly encouraged to consult with your physician and begin training immediately if applying for this position. This announcement constitutes the required 30 days advanced notice for testing requirements.

This position has been identified as High Complexity under the Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) and is subject to selective placement factor requirements contained in the Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) Standard and Guide when filling this vacancy. FIREFIGHTER RETIREMENT COVERAGE: This is a primary/rigorous position covered under the special retirement provisions of 5 USC 8336(c) for the Civil Service Retirement System and of 5 USC 8412(d) for the Federal Employees Retirement System.  This position is subject to a Maximum Entry Age (MEA) requirement which has been set at age 37.  Applicants must be under age 37 prior to their appointment date for entry into this position.  An applicant’s entry age may be adjusted based on credit for past primary/secondary service which is otherwise creditable for retirement.  Temporary primary/rigorous service will only be credited if performed prior to January 1, 1989 (temporary service performed beginning 1/1/89 or later is not creditable for retirement).  Applicants who are entitled to veteran’s preference are eligible to request a waiver to the maximum age requirement.
