This job announcement will be used to fill temporary seasonal positions in the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA).  Appointments to these positions are anticipated not-to-exceed 1039 hours in a service year.  The purpose of this position is wildland fire suppression, management, and control as a seasonal wildland firefighter.



·         TRAVEL AND RELOCATION EXPENSES WILL NOT BE AUTHORIZED.  Any relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty will be the responsibility of the selected employee.

·         Serve as a member of a fire crew assigned to suppress the full range of wildland fires, consisting of fireline construction, use of pumps and engines, hose lays using appropriate nozzles and nozzle adjustments in the use of water and additives; working in and around aircraft such as helicopters.

·         Patrols fireline to locate and extinguish embers, flare-ups, hotspot fires that may threaten developed fire lines.

·         Cleans, reconditions and stores fire tools and equipment.

·         Participates in fire and safety training, in the techniques, practices and methods of fire suppression.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  This is a physically arduous position. Duties involve field work requiring strenuous physical performance, endurance, and superior condition. Work requires prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, reaching, lifting and carrying items weighing over 50 pounds and shared lifting and carrying of heavier items, and similar strenuous activities requiring agility and dexterity. Duties include demands for strenuous activities in emergencies under adverse environmental conditions and over extended periods of time. Operation of some specialized fire equipment can place extended physical stress on incumbent during fire activities.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:  Work is primarily performed in forest and desert environments in steep terrain where surfaces may be extremely uneven, rocky, covered with thick tangles vegetation, smoky conditions.  Temperatures commonly exceed 100 degrees F and fall below freezing.  Risks include smoke inhalation, fire entrapment, snake or insect bites and stings, exposure to excessive machinery noise, and falling and rolling material.  Selectee must adjust and cope with exposure to weather elements and eating situations under an unpredictable set of circumstances.


To be rated eligible for this position, you must meet the selective factor (if any) in addition to qualifying experience and/or education described in the Occupational Assessment Questionnaire.  Candidates are required to meet OPM qualification standards outlined in the OPM Group Coverage Qualification Standards for Technical and Medical Support Positions and Individual Occupational Requirements for the Forestry Technician Series, GS-0462.  It is available for review on OPM's website at


Qualification for a GS-2 position is 3 months of general experience OR high school graduation or equivalent education OR 1 season of experience.


SEASONAL EXPERIENCE: A season of experience is considered to be a period of no less than 3 months of continuous employment on a seasonal basis.  Shorter periods may be combined to make a season, provided a total of at least 3 months experience is shown.  For any period where the work exceeds 3 months, the excess work is credited towards an additional season of experience.


GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position or experience that provided familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation.  Specialized experience may be substituted for general experience.


Examples of qualifying Forestry Technician experience include:

·        Forestry aid or technician experience;

·        Engineering, range or soil conservation technician experience that involved the application of cultural, resource conservation, or land management practices on non-forest or ranch lands when combined with knowledge of forestry operations and equipment;

·        Farming or ranching experience that involved application of cultural and soil and water conservation practices, including safety and use of equipment and that provided a basic understanding of land use;

·        Experience in forest or range fire control, prevention or suppression.

EDUCATION: To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts with your name, school name, credit hours, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking.  If transcripts are not included in your application package, education will not be credited.


Transcripts do not need to be official but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify then you will need to provide official transcripts before you enter on duty.

2)     In accordance with Executive Order 12564 and Department of Interior guidelines, applicants selected for this position are required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test prior to appointment. In addition, this position is a drug testing designated position subject to random testing for illegal drug use throughout the tenure of this appointment.

3)     Selected applicants must pass a pre-employment medical exam in accordance with the Federal Interagency Wildland Firefighter Medical Standards Program. Prior to appointment, selected applicants must be determined physically and medically cleared by an authorized physician to perform the strenuous and physically demanding duties of the position efficiently and without hazard to themselves or others.  As a condition of employment, incumbent is required to satisfactorily complete an annual medical examination.

4)     The hazardous nature of this job requires that Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) be worn. PPE is equipment (hard hats, gloves, boots, flame resistant clothing, and other personal protective equipment) used to protect the health of the employee.

5)     You may be assigned to work nights, early mornings, rotating shifts, holidays, and weekends.
