The Fargo VA Health Care System is a Level 2 Medical Center and a member of Veterans Integrated Service Network 23. This facility combines a 39 bed medical facility along with a 38 bed Community Living Center providing transitional care, both accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Fargo also has a Department of Veterans Affairs Benefits Office on campus, offering veterans the unique opportunity to obtain health care, benefits services, and Readjustment Counseling at one location. Due to the growing veteran population in our service area, nine Community Based Outpatient Clinics have been established with the tenth planned for opening in late 2012. DUTIES:

This position will serve as a staff psychologist with the Fargo VA Health Care System (FVAHCS).   This is a specialty position serving veterans with a diagnosis of PTSD and co-morbid addiction concerns.  In this capacity the incumbent will provide treatment in the form of individual therapy, group therapy, and psychological assessment, and also provide consultation to other members of the Substance Abuse Treatment Program (SATP) and mental health clinic.  

 

Clinical responsibilities include:

 

  • Providing a full range of psycho-diagnostic services including the use of psychological testing for patients within the FVAHCS.
  • Performing psychological evaluations for individuals with mental health and medical disorders for purposes of diagnostic clarification and treatment planning. These evaluations employ a comprehensive diagnostic interview, review of available records, collateral contact when available, as well as objective and cognitive tests when indicated.
  • Providing a range of psychological therapeutic interventions with individuals with mental health and medical disorders utilizing time-limited empirically supported modalities (e.g., PE or CPT).
  • Consult with and serves as a resource for other professional personnel concerning the need for, evaluation of, and development of psychological services at the Fargo VA Health Care System.

 

 

Work Schedule:  Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

 

 

 


QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:  

  • U.S. citizenship.  
  • Possess a doctoral degree in psychology from a graduate program in psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA).
  • Completed a professional psychology internship training program that has been accredited by APA.  Exceptions: (1) new VHA psychology internship programs that are in the process of applying for APA accreditation are acceptable in fulfillment of the internship requirement, provided that such programs were sanctioned by the VHA Central Office Program Director for Psychology and the VHA Central Office of Academic Affiliations at the time that the individual was an intern and (2) VHA facilities who offered full one-year pre-doctoral internships prior to PL 96-151 (pre-1979) are considered to be acceptable in fulfillment of the internship requirement.
  • Possess a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (e.g., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia.  Exception:  The Secretary may waive the requirement of licensure for an individual psychologist for a period not to exceed 2 years from the date of employment on the condition that such a psychologist provide care only under the supervision of a psychologist who is so licensed.  Non licensed psychologists who otherwise meet the eligibility requirement may be given a temporary appointment as a graduate psychologist under the authority of 38 U.S.C 7405 (a) (1) (D).  Failure to obtain licensure during that period is justification for termination of the temporary appointment.  This may result in termination of employment.
  • Proficient in spoken and written English.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:

GS-11 Experience:  None beyond the basic requirements.

GS-12 Experience:  In addition to the basic requirements at the GS-11 level, at least 1 year of experience as a professional psychologist equivalent to the next lower grade level.  Individuals assigned as a GS-12 psychologist may be in the process of obtaining licensure at the independent practice level.  If unlicensed, the individual must be supervised by a licensed psychologist and the experience and supervision must met the standards for psychology licensure.

GS-13 Experience:  In addition to the experience requirements at the GS-12 level, at least 1 additional year of experience as a psychologist equivalent to the next lower grade level.

Grade and step will be determined by a Professional Standards Board.
